The Big One on XM

First let me apologize up front for this being a long blog today, but I’ve been busy this week… and I’m gonna be out of the office until Tuesday. So here goes:

Truly the Nation’s Station
If you’re trying to decide between XM or Sirius satellite radio, here’s something to consider. WLW-AM will be added to the XM satellite radio lineup on Wednesday, March 1, on Channel 173.
The entire day – except for Reds and Bengals games – will be heard across North America on XM. (Major League Baseball has a separate deal with XM; the NFL has an exclusive deal with Sirius.) Alternative programming (taped or some live call-in shows) will air during Reds and Bengals games.
So this means Gary Burbank, Mike McConnell will be heard from coast to coast. And Cunningham and Furman? Is this a good idea? At least WLW-AM will truly be “the nation’s station” again – as it was in 1934-39 when it broadcast experimentally on 500,000 watts.

Nick’s turn tonight
Nick Lachey gets a little prime time on WB’s “Twins” today (9:30 p.m., Ch 64), after watching his brother dance on ABC the past two months. Nick plays a former underwear model named Chalie Solik, hired by Farrah (Molly Stanton) to be marketing director of the family undergarments company. Hijinks ensure, I'm sure...

Last 'cast
Channel 64’s 10 p.m. news signs off tonight after 26 months. Parent Sinclair Broadcast Group has pulled the plug on the WSTR-TV news operation. News Director Pete Janovas will close the newscast with a video of all the folks who worked behind-the-scenes in the newsroom.
“What was it Springer used to say on Channel 5? "For those you see... and those you don’t?" Anyway - it’s been an interesting few years. And this (cancellation) really is a shame because folks worked so hard.”
Here’s a question: How quickly will anchor Kim Moening -- or reporters Marjani Coffey, Jessica Donnellon or Karin Johnson -- get hired by another TV station in town?
Another question: Will Ch. 19's 10 p.m. audience immediately grow by a few thousand without any local news competition?

Ummm..."for those you see and those you don't" was a Nick Clooney-ism.

Can you please provide us with some insight as to the source of the information that WLW is coming to XM?

Thanks.

I have a hunch about where WSTR's on-air talent will go. Recently, former WXIX news director was hired at the Sinclair duopoly in Dayton (WKEF/WRGT) and is supposed to start a new morning newscast. If you looked at Sinclair's comments before on shutting down WSTR, they said they were helping people find jobs in Cincinnati or in other Sinclair markets. I wonder if some of the on-air talent will be shipped a few miles up 75 to help start the new morning newscast in Dayton - WKEF/WGRT are short-handed talent wise and they aren't advertising for new talent - they may have been banking on the fact that they knew WSTR was shutting down.

Two questions:
1. Will the WLW on XM air commercials?
2. Will the WLW on XM air UC mens basketball games?

Thanks!

Two issues with WLW on XM...

Will they remain focused on Cincinnati or start a more national focus?

Will UC and XU games still be heard during the NCAA tourney?

Is WLW-AM the only station joining XM? I would love to be able to listen to WGN-AM/Chicago on my XM radio.

Is WLW being added for the day or forever?

I can get WLW at night on the way home from work, but would like to be able to listen during the day. If this deal is for good, I will buy XM.

thanks.....
dave in Atlanta.

i doubt that fox19 will take any of the wb64ers fox19 has always had a small staff. i have looked at the other channels web sites and no one seems to be hiring. i didnt mind watching 64 because kim may be robotic but she is nice on the eyes

Yes the channel will host commercials.

Little to NO (probably just no) sports that may have anyother contracts pending with another provider of.... you get the picture. No sports.

Currently my XM Radio reads Channel 173 as "Off Air". As opposed to just not being there.

Will WLW still be terrible when it hits XM? Or will it be even worse?

I am really sorry to see WSTR news go down... It was a brief, to-the-point broadcast in the spirit of Al Schottelkotte (spell??).
One could watch it for 30 minutes and get out and get to bed....
It is painful to sit through an hour of blather on Ch 19... Defeats the purpose of an earlier evening newscast.
Don't get me wrong--I like the personalities on Fox, but the hour is so filled with crap that it is just hard to watch. There just ISN'T an hour worth of local news, gang. Give it up...

Yes, you're all right. That was Clooney's sign off, not Springer's. Thanks to you all.

XM programming is boring. WLW or no, Sirius is the way to go. Much better content overall.

For all you suckers buying into satellite radio: just like cable TV, it will soon demand a large monthly fee and it will be loaded up with commercials... Financial reports have both companies losing money like a fire hose down a toilet. It's coming... I'll laugh when you are paying $65 per month to listen to comercial-laden pay radio... LOLOLOLOLOLOL!

What will 700 WLW broadcast on XM 173 during Reds games? They are not permitted to broadcast the games on XM 173 due to MLB restrictions.

This is a huge deal outside the Cincinnati market. How did they pull off being the only "regular" over the air local station to be broadcasted nationwide on XM? How much are they paying XM? How long is the contract? Will we ever know ratings figures on XM?

I would love to hear cincinnati radio stations on xm or sirius.. but are the two stations xm and sirius.. merging now?

so they'd be on the 'merged' station..

i hope they pick up internet stations too like worldwidebluegrass.com
now that would be cool!
