July TV Ratings Are In

July local news ratings from overnight Nielsen meters came in this morning. It’s usually considered the least important of the four sweeps books – with viewing patterns disrupted by vacations – but you can still see local viewing trends. And the trends looks similar to May sweeps: Channel 12 was first 5-7 a.m., noon and 11 p.m.; Channel on first 5-6:30 p.m., with Channel 12 second. Channel 5 was third in all newscasts except 5-7 a.m., when it was fourth behind third-place Channel 19. Channel 19’s 10 p.m. news was only local late newscast to increase ratings. In a month, Channel 19 gets competition at 10 p.m. from a Channel 64 newscast produced by Channel 12, with anchors Cammy Dierking and Dave Burchell (starting Aug. 21). I'll check back later today to read your comments about the news wars here...

Lance’s Cincinnati lover
Did anyone recognize the name of Lance Bass’s gay partner, Reichen Lehmkuhl? Reichen, who won "The Amazing Race 4" in August 2003 with his partner Chip, was born here. (They were identified as Reichen and Chip from Beverly Hills.) He attended St. Ann’s Elementary School in Groesbeck. At age 10, he moved with his mother to Boston, where he went to high school. He went to the U.S. Air Force Academy, then moved to California. Reichen has dabbled in acting, appearing on "Days Of Our Lives," "Frasier," "Drew Carey" and "The Young and the Restless." His father and stepmother live in Clermont County. If anyone out there has stayed in touch with him, please let me know. I'd love to interview him.

Made in Cincinnati
For months I’d heard rumors that MTV was filming a "Made" here, and finally I’ve got confirmation. At 4:30 p.m. Monday we’ll see a half-hour episode featuring Jordan Rolfes, 17, of North College Hill. MTV producers prepared him to go on his first date, attending the LaSalle High School prom in May at The Syndicate in Newport. Rolfes tells me he’ll be seen skydiving and taking dancing lessons. MTV found Rolfes through an open casting call at the downtown public libray in January. MTV also has shot a second "Made" here, with Milford High School student Katrina Knuckles. Her episode will air this fall, MTV says.

Tease for new station

Folks attending the Macy’s Music Festival this weekend will see a teaser ad in the program for the new sister FM station for the WIZ FM and the BUZZ AM. It simply says, "Coming Soon! Get Ready for 100.3 FM," with a backdrop listing every possible radio format. Here’s my guess – it will be a music station, and it will play the music of Friday headliner Patti LaBelle. Radio One, which owns WIZ and BUZZ, has bought country station WIFE-FM in Connersville, and are moving it here. All they’ve said is that it will be on the air about or before Labor Day.

Tom Sandman update
Tom Sandman, longtime creative director and former music host at WARM98, has taken his act to WMKV-FM (89.3), the big band/nostalgia/old-time radio/senior services station at Maple Knoll Village retirement community in Springdale. He hosts "Sandman Standards" 5-7 p.m. Saturdays (the first hour repeats Thursdays at 8 p.m.). Sandman, who also is an account executive at the station, will open his 6 p.m. hour Saturday with 30 minutes of Spike Jones music, the crazy music satirist popular in the 1950s. It’s a plug for the free outdoor Kentucky Symphony Orchestra performance of Spike Jones music with Jones impersonator Carl Mack at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Devou Park Amphitheater. By the way, WMKV-FM has picked up Mike Martini , Mark Magistrelli and their old-time radio shows that aired last year on WVXU-FM, before Xavier University sold the station.

Good news about the old time radio shows. I've missed them ever since WGUC devoured the late WVXU.

So with channel 5 4th in the mornings, what happens to the Today Show? Isn't it still tops over GMA and the Early Show?

Remember when channel 19 news first started and it looked like a high school TV station? 5 is just not that bad (like 19 was) to keep getting clobbered. Maybe they should go for more hard news and toss the gimmicks....

Ditto.

Nine has the better of the 4 morning shows.

5 is horrible. Princeton Digest (HIGH SCHOOL) is much better than the Today5 wondercrew.

19 is tolerable but, I still don't understand the charm of the hosts. Rob Williams can't speak and gosh and golly gee, Mrs. Ed...please!

12 is getting back to where it once was. My suggestion would be to lighten up the morning...give Anna a goose to loosen her up from reading prompter and move John Lomax to the afternoon and team him back with Cammy.

9 is tied with 12. I can't wait till maternity leave ends for Kathrine. At least they didn't have Jennell Walton sub for her!

I'm guessing the "Channel" on first 5-6:30 p.m. would be indicating Ch.9??

anyone surprised that channel 5 was last in all of the ratings? if they would just report the news that's important, instead of telling us about "breaking news in montana about a fire at some obscure coffee can making plant..." then maybe they could gain a little credibility. how on earth does a fire 2,000 miles away affet me? if they would kill the gimmicks and just report the news with a news team that stays around longer than 9 months at a time, then better things can happen. good luck channel 5 and congrats channel 9 & 12 for your consistency!

Nope wasn't surprised at all, but coming soon your top 5 at noon. Maybe Kiese should write a article bout how 5 always lags behind in the ratings. WLW must be ashamed that they signed the deal with 5.

WLW is in it for the money, The most credible newscast is fox19 that is the only one I watch

Hey kiese were you at the network presentations of the pilots a week ago. If so I would like to know your take on the pilots we should watch. I have heard nothing, but good news for james woods in shark, and also studio 60 on the sunset strip.
Please Help

hey kiese I was snooping around youtube and found the opening to nine news at 11 back in 1992. http://youtube.com/watch?v=o7-aprKcmyg&search=WCPO

There is also a opening of the news back in 1958

I wonder if the people at Channel 5 are surprised that they are last in the ratings? They must think they are doing something good since they haven't changed squat over the last few years...uh, except their noon anchors, 5pm anchors, 6pm anchors, 11pm anchors, field reporters, meteorolgists, news directors, probably their photojournalists, their helicopter...oh, that could be the reason they are last in the ratings! C'mon Channel 5, show a little pride and get out of this last place rut!!

Now there's some good humor.

Turnover is indeed killing TV 5. And word is - it's not over.

Friends of mine who work there say Tom Sussi, Emily Longnecker and Dave Wagner are all looking.

Plus, Bina Roy is gone next month.

Same old song and dance.

yes, that is humorous since i don't think channel 19 is that great. honestly, they mught have the anchor team that has been together the longest, but they are far from good...probably one of the weaker pairs on all of evening news. but, to be fair...to each his own. channel 19 may be good for some, but not others. thank heavens for democracy!

i guess if you like "stiff" anchors, you could get anna townsend to pair up with kimberly moening. what ever happened to her i wonder? i do agree if ms. townsend would loosen up a bit, it would be good for her. 12 does a good morning show despite her rigidity. i like john lomax, i think he complements steve horstmeyer well.

if you like stiff anchors, i dont remember his name but he worked at wlwt as a fillin anchor or weekends 5 i think he does voiceovers on wmkv. once the camera was on him hie elbow was locked into place and all that moved was his mouth. his name was bill or something like that

at 7/30/2006 7:04 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I believe his name is Bill Meyers

at 7/30/2006 8:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bill Myers was never like that. All you have to see is him on top of the Comex Building getting spooked out by a guy in a gorilla suit...or him playing Superman on the Braun show. Bill was never stiff. Now...the hairpiece, maybe but the rest of him, nope.

John... I'm sure it's a typo, but I've been asked to tell you that the call letters WCPO are missing from the "first place" sentence involving the 5-6:30pm time period. Also, did you know that the distance from first to second in the 6am race was 4/hundreths of a point? (We were second.) Five years ago the distance was four whole ratings points. The morning market is very, very tight. ...Bob
