A Big Day

Big day for TV, locally and national. Channel 64 debuts its new 10 p.m. newscast, produced by Channel 12 from the Local 12 studio. The TV season starts unofficially today, with Fox airing the second season premiere of "Prison Break" and the new "Vanished." And the 4 CBS radio stations in town -- including country leader B105 and Q102 -- have new owners.
Read on.
Local 12 at 10 on My 64 TV
Channel Expect to see the Local 12 branding and My 64 branding alternating on the screen. I’m sure most viewers eventually will be smart enough to figure out what’s going on, but execs from both stations are concerned that the folks with Nielsen diary won’t get it. As they tell me, for Ch 64 to get credit in a diary, viewers must put down Channel 64 – and they worry that people will write Channel 12 in their diary when watching the Ch 64 news at 10 p.m.
Anyway, this should be an interesting experiment. Will it hurt Channel 12’s 11 p.m. ratings? Will it hurt Fox 19 at 10? (Probably not much?) And will anyone be watching Channel 64 in prime-time once it drops WB and switches to MyNetworkTV on Sept. 5? After that, can the power of Ch 12 prop up the 10 p.m. newscast, or will ratings be as low as they were for Ch 64’s ill-conceived NewsCentral?

Great start to the TV season
Great news: Fox starts the TV season early tonight with two terrific shows. "Prison Break" (8 p.m., Ch 19) turns into "The Fugitives," with 8 inmates on the loose after their escape last season. William Fichtner (ABC’s "Invasion") is a nice addition to the cast as FBI Agent Mahone, who starts by tracking down Michael Scofield’s tattoo artist.
"Vanished" follows at 9 p.m. (Ch 19). It’s in my Top 10 of new fall shows. The pilot is very well done – about the wife (Joanne Kelly) of a U.S. senator (John Allen Nelson) who disappears during a big gala to honor her charity work. Everyone is a suspect; everyone has a secret or two. Nice twists and turns, particularly in the final minutes.
And if you have HBO, put Spike Lee’s Katrina anniversary documentary on the DVD: "When The Levees Broke: a Requiem in Four Acts" (9-11 p.m. today and Tuesday).
And one more bit of good news: Don’t bother looking on Ch. 9 at 10 p.m. for "One Ocean View." ABC yanked the reality drama last week after only 2 telecasts. Same thing happened in July to ABC’s “The One,” it’s "American Idol" rip-off. That’s good news for viewers getting fed up with reality TV…

Q102, B105 Sold
This just in: Philadelphia-based Entercom announced this morning it has bought the 4 CBS stations here – Q102, B105, Oldies WGRR and alternative WAQZ-FM 97.3. Entercom paying $262 million for CBS stations in Memphis, Austin, Rochester and Cincinnati. Entercom will take over the stations in October through a local marketing agreement.

Pete Rose? Really?
The surprises keep coming.... First the Reds pull the plug on announcer Steve Stewart after this season, opening the door for a Joe Nuxhall comeback... and then Nux is runnung dead last in our Cincinnati.com poll for a new Reds radio analyst?
As of this morning, Pete Rose leads the four-man survery with nearly 50%. Second is Thom Brennaman (25%), and then comes my choice, Dan Hoard (16%). Nux has only 8%. And where would Chris Welsh rank, if on the ballot? As I wrote in Sunday's blog, I wouldn't be surprised to see another former player in the booth next year, given ownership's penchant for Reds tradition. And I expect to hear more of Nux next year, regardless.

I'm not totally sure, but I would think that Major League Baseball has some contractual right of approval even for local bradcasts as they own the product.

So, how does Pete Rose figure as a possibility given that he is banned from all things MLB?

once again, Deb Dixon pays for an exclusive interview involving this missing boy. She got the foster father by promising a reward from Jeff Ruby. When will this be exposed?

I'm not sure Pete would want to give up his lucrative 15 days a month signing autographs in Vegas.

Chris would be good since next year he's going to have to call a majority of the games anyway under the new FSN contract...at least going to the radio would mercifully kill Chris' Clubhouse.

Thom Brennamen is rolling in the dough in the desert PLUS is the new voice of the BCS Championship series on Fox, so that seems like a longshot.

Rumor has it Kent Mercker is the perfect former player/analyst, if he wants to keep spending time away from his family.

I hope Steve Stewart catches on someplace...he is generic but could get better in the right place with the right partner. Or he could replace Dan Hoard with the Red Sox triple-A team when he returns here, where he rightly belongs!

Hey Kiese -

Fox 19 must be getting nervous about Local 12's 10PM. I hear Apuzzo is starting a TEN DAY FORECAST tonight at 10. He wrote about it in the email he sends out.

You should keep track of how far off he is.

I think its our "meterologists" that have caused our warmer drier weather this year because of all the talking they do especially Apuzzo and OBrien

Pete Rose is banned from baseball. That includes being a broadcaster. So, no dice for Petey...

Anon5:51pm,

Thanks for pointing that out. I don't know why people want Pete in the radio booth. That would make the Reds organization the laughing stock of the league.

So why are they calling it Local 12 on My 64. In other cities where one station produces news for another station, they simply use that stations channel number. Why is 12 trying to make it so difficult.

Did Channel 5 actually show a poor kitten about to get a lethal injection....

Did I see that ratings stunt with Emily Longnecker (to quote Lisa Cooney). Brennan Donnellan... for shame. I see big changes at Eyenitwitness 5.....

Joe Nuxhall is terrible. Terrible. I can't think of a worse idea than a Nuxhall radio booth comeback.

Dan Hoard doing Reds games is a *great* idea. And there absolutely has to be a place at the table for Nux. I think a Marty-Dan combo with Joe appearing on a schedule that works for him would be ideal. But...Pete? Even if there wasn't the MLB roadblock, I'd have doubts. Anyone remember his performance years ago when 5 tried to scoot up its newscast numbers by bringing Pete in as sports anchor for a week?

Judging from the first two nights, the 12-produced My 64 newscast has completely removed any traces of the stench left behind by the terrible Sinclair effort. Everyone, from Elbert on down, deserves credit for this one. 64 gets a quality product *plus* instant credibility from using talent who are well-known and loved in this market. I suspect 19 won't take this lying down. The 64/12 newscast is too good and will present a threat if they don't respond.

As a sidebar on the purchase of Q102, B105, WGRR and WAQZ...did anyone read the Post article with WGUC/WVXU honcho Richard Eiswerth touting all the benefits flowing from the WGUC takeover of WVXU? Many of us newsroom folk listen to public radio in the morning, so it sure was interesting to see how few figures were quoted in the piece. Here are some of the details that escaped the Post's attention:
---
ARB Summer 2005 (the "old" WVXU)

WVXU average quarter hour: 4800

ARB Fall 2005 (after WGUC "makeover")

WVXU AQH: 6300

ARB Winter 2006

WVXU AQH: 5600

ARB Spring 2006

WVXU AQH: 4900

---

Hmm. 4800 "then", 4900 "now". Hardly an achievement to crow about. Can you say "statistically insignificant?" The clear trend for WVXU and its new masters is down, down, down. Really unfortunate; this used to be one hell of a station. Right after the sale, WGUC had its one moment of glory with their new toy...but the steady decline in the numbers show that WVXU listeners obviously sampled, listened and are leaving in droves. (If this had happened on my watch in commercial radio, Mother Clear Channel would be whupping my butt to a bright red shine.)

Interesting, too, how little we’re hearing about the stupendous non-success of the last few combined WGUC-WVXU fund drives.

But no, you won't find any of these unpleasant truths in the Post article.

So keep up the good work, Kiese!

From Todays Cincy Post about the CW
In Northern Kentucky, Insight Communication viewers will get the network on a basic cable channel. Channel 12 is still negotiating with Cincinnati Time Warner cable to carry the network for subscribers on basic cable. Unless a deal is struck, CW will only be available for TW viewers at the pricier digital tier. CW debuts Sept. 18 with a lineup that is essentially the best of WB and UPN programming, such as "Gilmore Girls," "Seventh Heaven," "Everybody Hates Chris" and "Smackdown."

I think the point of showing a cat before it was being euthanised is to bring attention to animal overpopulation and the lack of interest in adoption.

Many animal "lovers" refuse to consider ,or spend the money to, or show the responsibility to fix their pets thinking that allowing them to roam free is love.Unfortunately, the demand for free kittens and stray dogs is not as much as the public believes. The cat certainly didn't suffer or have bereaved family members. I don't consider that you can say that the kittens death was exploited.

If you are sickened by it, adopt a pet, encourage responsibility by those who acquire them. Owners often dump kitttens and pregnant mothers. I happen to have taken in a stray mom myself. Needless to say, people think that if they dump their cat or dog in a nice suburb or on a farm that someone will step up and take care of it.
Usually these "nice" people try ,but they can only help so many. Many of us have allergies after all. So yes, it may be distasteful to see a cat being euthanised but doesn't good journalism occasionally have to raise an issue in order to bring it properly to the publics attention? Especially when the public fails to fully grasp the underlying issues. I think so. Listen to Bob Barker. Spay and neuter your pet. If you are not a breeder and do not want to accept the responsibility of kittens and puppies. Don't treat a pet like an object and just dump it when you are bored with it. Love your pet. Realise that they get old like we do.
I am glad if this message gets out to the public.

It seems the FOX19 is trying to get rid of its fans. "Vanished " did not only vanished from the channel, but FOX19 continuous lying about when it is coming back by posting the wrong time on its web site, not the best policy for a channel, isn't it?
