Jericho & MOJO & other stuff

One of my favorite new fall shows arrives tonight: CBS' "Jericho" (8 p.m., Ch 12, 7). I call it "Lost in a cornfield." It has succesfully copied many of the suspenseful elements of "Lost," in this drama about a small Kansas town cut off from the rest of the nation after a nuclear explosion in the Denver area. Like "Lost," the folks don’t know what dangers are Out There beyond their group. I know some TV critics didn’t like the show, but I did. It’s my second-favorite new show, to NBC’s "Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip." And I think "Jericho" has a better chance for survival than "Invasion," "Surface" or "Threshold" did last year.
CBS wisely put it at 8 p.m., so "Lost" fans may tune in an hour early. "Lost" fans may watch tonight, since "Lost" doesn’t return for two weeks (Oct. 4).

Lost & Found
And here’s another heads up for "Lost" fans: ABC will air 6 new episodes through Nov. 8 – then it will go away until February sweeps. It’s the "Prison Break" and "NYPD Blue" treatment… When "Lost" returns next year, it will run continuously into May sweeps, like "24." Taye Diggs' "Day Break," a "Groundhog Day"-like series, will debut 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15.

"Kidnapped" & CW
NBC’s "Kidnapped" also debuts tonight at 10 p.m. (Ch. 5). I found the opening a little confusing, but by the end of the hour nearly everyone is a possible suspect. I liked Fox’s "Vanished" pilot better – but have lost track of the show since. To me, it’s 50-50 whether "Kidnapped" makes it through the year or not.
And the CW rolls out the first new show tonight, "America's Next Top Model," at 8 p.m., after two nights of reruns.

Fall TV feedback
I’m interested in your opinions on “Jericho,” “Kidnapped,” "Studio One" and other new shows, so post to this blog if you watch tonight.

MOJO update
Morning man Keith Mitchell has produced a one-hour MOJO salute to air at 11 p.m. tonight on WMOJ-FM (94.9), the final hour for the “Jammin’ Oldies” station. At midnight, the MOJO call letters and branding moves up the dial to 100.3, as Radio One (WIZ and BUZZ owners) launch a new station on a new frequency targeting African-Americans 30 and older.
Mitchell and the MOJO staff has posted a nice thank-you to listeners on the station web site.
http://www.mojo949.com/
It’s not clear if any of the MOJO staff will move to the new station. The new MOJO has only 4 openings – middays and the “Quiet Storm” 7 p.m.-midnight show – and two weekend part-timers, says Phillip David March, program director for WIZ and the new MOJO. March will do 3-7 p.m. on MOJO, as he does now on WIZ, starting in late October. (The first 4-5 weeks will be music intensive, with no DJs.) The new MOJO will have a syndicated morning show, probably Tom Joyner from the BUZZ. (It’s definitely not Steve Harvey, I’m told.) So only 4 openings doesn’t leave much for the old MOJO staff, which just learned about the format sale a week ago.
For more about the new MOJO, see my story today.

STAR replaces MOJO
Starting 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Cumulus’ country STAR 96.5 will be simulcast on both 94.9 and 96.5 for two weeks. The 94.9 signal (on the Ch 64 tower on Winton Road in College Hill) will give the country station better penetration into Northern Kentucky, and a better shot at competing with B105 (WUBE-FM, 105.1). The 96.5 signal is on the WLW tower in Mason. B105 was No. 2 in spring ratings; STAR was No. 12.
No word on what will replace STAR country on 96.5 in October. (Go back to 96 Rock?) Stay tuned.

What's going to replace Tom Joyter on the Buzz??

What happened to Nathan Ive on the Buzz? He really sucked. They should have fired the PD for even hiring him. Looks like Jay Love's career move didn't last long, he's back on the air in the afternoon.

Never knew Donna Summers and The Judds sang a duet. Last song on MOJO: Last Dance.....well, for two seconds and then the Star switched over.

Anon 10:20...I've hear 1160 WDJO in Columbus. Don't give me that "north of the river" crap. The signal is good during the day and the audio is not muddy.

hey kiese loved studio 60 for the same reasons i loved the west wing. Matthew Perry did a great job and wouldn't expect anything, but from him.
I read on futoncritic.com that the numbers for studio 60 dropped in the second half of the show and how this could ruin the show down the line.

Hey kiese cant wait for the season premieres tonight on NBC. I gotta work, but my dvr is going to be working heavily tonight. ONe season premiere i can't wait for is my fave show The Office. I wonder how they are going to resolve the Jim and Pam situation.

With country Star 96.5 moving to 94.9, will they bring back the all new stereo fm94 WKXF? KIX Country lived at 94.1. I could use a KIX pack sweep of continuous hit country music!

I want my MOJO Back!!!!!

Not only does Oldies 1160 WDJO have a very weak signal they have very weak ratings to match. According to the latest numbers, Jerry Springer's station is now beating Dusty Rhodes' station in the ratings. In a conservative town like Cincinnati, Liberal Talk gets more listeners than moldy oldies. It's gotta hurt "The Good Guys"

Mr Anonymous,

I have to defend my friends at WDJO. WDJO does NOT have a very weak signal. During the day, WDJO is a very strong 10,000 watts pointed at Cincinnati. (They're a 5000 watt station, but because they're directional, it's effectively 10,000 watts during the day). The night signal is bad to the north and east, but nighttime cumes (total number of listeners) tend to drop after 7:00 pm anyway on all stations.

WDJO is getting better shares than that station did when it had the Bengals. If I remember correctly, WBOB cumed about 70,000 at its peak. WDJO just cumed about 35,000 in the latest Trend, but they listen longer.

If you want to talk about ratings compared to the old WCKY at 1530, I'm afraid WDJO is the winner. You may be quoting the Trend that came out yesterday, but sales departments don't sell Trends. They sell the book. The Spring Book showed WDJO with a 1.2 share, while WCKY had a 0.6. The Summer Book won't be out until the end of October. And remember, this was still WCKY as Air America with a 50,000 watt booming day and night signal. WCKY probably has more total listeners, but I'll bet WDJO's listen longer which is actually the way you get higher shares. It's called Time Spent Listening, or TSL.

The Good Guys aren't the least bit worried about WCKY or WSAI.

Jeff, WDJO is trending down IN THE SUMMER. With the long daylight hours, this is the best time of year for listeners to be sampling the radio station. Not a good sign for "The Good Guys." I think the boys have peaked.

Mr. Anon,

The Trends can fool you though. September will be big for them, and I think they'll stay around a 1.0 share. You have to realize too that this was kind of a quiet launch of a station. So many people don't know this station exists. (The Good Guys are working on that.) They are also working on a situation with the nighttime signal. I also know it's tough to get people to listen to music on AM. I understand their business model and it makes great sense. I think they'll be fine. Remember, it's only been two full books for them. It takes a LONG time to get these things established.

Anybody on the north side who can report on WCIN's new signal?

Let me help out if i may. The true test of wether a station is working is the results achieved from running an ad campaign on that station. I run a considerable amount of spots and my results are quite astounding! The demographic that 1160 hits have become loyal customers in my restaurant. The Good Guys are good for business!!

And as the days get shorter and WDJO's signal fades away in the sunset, watch your customers dwindle. Advertising on an AM music station is a waste of money.
Glad it's not my money because I would only buy AM talk.

I find it extreemly sad that most of you seem to take on such a bitter attitude towards WDJO. A wise man once said "live and let live" if you don't like WDJO thats fine, but it isnt helping matters b*tching and moaning about it on here. Show some respect for those that do like the station, and it's current format.

I just found 1160 thanks to a billboard and I'm glad I did ... finally music that I grew up with ... I flip between 1160 and WCIN when I'm not listening to the radio I tune to internet radio to get my oldies fix ... I hope 1160 is here to stay keep up the good work

WDJO will succeed. It's playing the greatest music of all time, and that's bound to draw an audience over time.

I love the station and stream it as often as possible.
