Bearcats Bounce "American Idol" Again

Channel 19 is doing it again to "American Idol" fans. Wednesday's two-hour show will be delayed because of the UC Bearcats-Pittsburgh basketball game. The same thing happens next Wednesday, Jan. 31, for the UC-Louisville game.
The good news: These are the only two "American Idol" pre-emptions by Ch. 19. The remaining UC games will be on weekends.
Ch. 19 "purposely stayed away from UC games that interfered with 'American Idol' voting nights," says Tony Phillips, station spokesman. Viewer voting begins Tuesday, Feb. 20, when the top 12 male singers perform.
The station also lucked out. Westwood's Robert Hatcher sang at the Birmingham auditions, which air next Tuesday.
To appease fans of the hugely popular reality show, Ch. 19 will shrink its 10 p.m. news to a half-hour Wednesday so the two-hour "American Idol" can start at 10:30 p.m.
On Jan. 31, the one-hour "Idol" will air at 11 p.m., following a one-hour local newscast. "Bones," pre-empted that night, will air at 11 p.m. Thursday. So no "Simpsons" on those nights.
For those who can get Dayton's Fox station, Ch. 45 will air "Idol" in its regular prime-time slot both weeks.

That is why I just set my TIVO for 45 instead of 19. I get tired of the "Bearcat Bounce".

Why can't 19 carry American Idol on 19.2 their "Tube TV" Music channel? I"m sure most viewers would rather watch Idol than the music videos.

Pffft...

Why don't you take pride in your city's team? American Idol is a national show. It can be on at any other time. I think it's great to see Cincinnati teams on TV and you should take a greater appreciation in it.

ANON 3;59 - If you are recording on TIVO - does it even matter if Idol is on at 8pm, or 10:30pm? Regardless of your particular situation, it's interesting that other posts lament the state of local news and the lack of quality, original local programming, yet Bearcat Basketball on FOX19 is so maligned. It is forgotten that WXIX has broadcast UC basketball for more than 20 years. While displacing the most popular show on TV may be inconvenient (especially for the station - which looses BIG money on the deal) it shouldn't be suprising. They've been doing it for more than 20 years! Does any other local station make such an effort to produce original local programming? Isn't this the kind of thing this blog says is missing from local radio stations - original local programming?

Kiese,
Back in 1993 you did an article on Producer/Director David Ashbrock and the UC basketball broadcasts on 19. You talked about the high quality of the production and how they were on par with the networks. They still are. They've only gotten better. Maybe you should revisit that topic.
