MOJO Working For Radio One

Now we know why Radio One paid $5 million for the call letters and intellectual property of "MOJO" (WMOJ-FM, 94.9) in September. Acquiring an established brand – even though Radio One has radically changed the music – provided the boost the company wanted in launching a new Cincinnati station on a brand-new frequency (100.3) here.
MOJO is the big story in the fall Arbitron ratings released today. The new MOJO debuted at No. 9, with a 4.4% audience share. That's close to the average for "jammin' oldies" on 94.9.
It's too early to gauge impact of the other changes -- The Wolf, SupertalkFM96.5, The Sound -- since they occurred in the middle of the Sept.-Dec. ratings period. But here's one piece of significant news: Entercom's "The Sound," WSWD-FM (94.9) just hired Tommy BoDean as program director. He was KISS107.1 program director for 13 years, until last summer. With BoDean on board, they’ll start hiring local DJs soon.
As usual, Clear Channel’s WLW was No. 1, as it has been for seven consecutive years. Clear Channel also had the top three stations in the 25-54 demo advertisers demands: WLW-AM, WEBN-FM, WOXF-FM. WVMX-FM (MIX94.1) had one of its best books, thanks to the boost from Christmas music, ranking 7th in the 25-54 demo. Whoopi Goldberg's syndicated morning show, which debuted in July on MIX94.1, was 6th in the 25-54 demo, ahead of morning shows on WUBE-FM and WGRR-FM.
Here is the fall rankings by audience share for all listeners age 12 and older:
1. WLW-AM, 9.8
2. WRRM-FM, 6.2
3. WEBN-FM, 6.0
4. WUBE-FM, 5.3
5. WGRR-FM, 4.9
6. WKRQ-FM, 4.7
7. WKFS-FM, 4.6
8. WOFX-FM, 4.5
9. WMOJ-FM, 4.4
10. (tie) WKRC-AM, WIZF-FM, 4.3
12. WVMX-FM, 4.2
13. WSWD-FM, 2.4 (for only 5 weeks)
14. WAKW-FM, 1.7
15. (tie) WCKY-AM, WYGY-FM, 1.6 (Ratings for WYGY-FM are for 8 weeks of WAQZ-FM and 4 weeks of The Wolf on 97.3)
17. WHKO-FM, 1.1
18. WNKR-FM, WSAI-AM, 1.0 (WSAI as liberal talk)
20. (tie) WDJO-AM, WOXY-FM, WPFB-FM, 0.9
23. (tie) WDBZ-AM, WTUE-FM, 0.8
25. WLQT-FM, 0.6
26. (tie) WSCH-FM, WCIN-AM, WFTK-FM, 0.5 (WFTK-FM rating for 5 weeks as SupertalkFM96.5)

Two "Sounds" I definitely DON'T want to hear.

- DJ's taking up quality music time
&
- Anything that might remotely start sounding like 107.1

This doesn't show dayparts but I think its still good to note these points from the numbers...

Q102 tops KISS (could it be the lack of local content on the CC stations? About ten years ago folks might recall that when CC bought WAQZ and reformatted to match the Top40, the beat Q102. So Q's gotten past their [I hate to say it, Channel 5 like identity crisis). Another point.. CC is posting for a local morning host(s) for Kiss, so they're dropping Valentine... will a local morning show (and i'd assume younger than the good and always entertaining Jeff and Jen). My guess is you'll see a younger female play a large role to hit their 23/f demo.

Speaking of CC voicetracked stations, Mix is still tanking... Will the Sound prove local DJ's bring in higher ratings.

Media One buys the competition to the WIZ and is beating the WIZ...

Another talkingpoint.. will GRR continue to grow shares based on aging population? Has their expansion of format brought in new, younger listeners?

I'm a "TV Insider" but with all the moves in the last three months, Cincinnati radio is actually heating up! Alright and GO!

kiese how did furman do in ratings for his first week.

Kiese - forgive my confusion here. Is WCKY's listing as the sports format or the liberal talk format or the self-help format?

I saw WSAI listed as liberal talk, but these stations have been all over the map, I have no idea what's what.

It also looks like WLWT provides news/weather for three of the top radio stations in Cincinnati, yet is in the dumper in TV ratings. Do you think the radio investment is not paying off for them?

Tommy was only PD at Kiss for a couple of years, not 13. I wish him the best of luck at the new gig as he was a good guy to work with.

Kiese here:
--Ratings for WSAI (1360) were for liberal talk. They flipped 'SAI & 'CKY formats on July 1, and this ratings period ran late Sept.-early Dec.
--Too early to get ratings for Furman. First substantial measure comes in April, for winter quarter (Jan-March) ratings.

Do you remember a radio station several years ago, based in Eaton?
I am racking my brain trying to think of it) It competed with WHIO radio and with WWEZ. It played a lot of Big Band music, show music and easy listening It always came in better at night, and I honestly dont remember if it was AM or FM.
One night my dad went to turn it on at it was gone.(We were still living on Flemming Road at the time so it has been at least 15 years.
Listeners....help!
from the neighborhood

Forgot something on the subject of radio..... What do you think of WPFB's switch back to country??
I remember Moon Mullins and his fans picketing when he was let go.
Also remember the "good guys")CD
Craft and John Barry(Re Estevez) on Saturday mornings
from the neighborhood

No, don't remember any station in Eaton.
As for WPFB-AM (910) in Middletown, I wasn't surprised they dropped talk with FM 96.5 in Cincinnati going talk and taking O'Reilly. I miss Imus, was surprised that 'PFB-AM came in strong all the way down I-75 to the Ohio River on my morning commute. But they had to do something else. So they're going back to their roots.
Interesting trivia about Andy Furman: Technically he's back on the big one. The FM 96.5 transmitter is on WLW's tower near Mason!

Hey Flemming Road-er. You might be looking for WCTM (1130am)
At one time it was owned by a guy named Steve Coning. He and I worked together in Fairfield (late 60's-early 70's) and he left to go back to Eaton where his family owned a station.

There was actually an AM & FM and if you want some history go to this site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WCTM

That sounds like what you are looking for. Take care of Middletown, just in case I ever come back.

John,

Radio ratings are for 12+, TV are for 2+.

Bearman, the Sound won't sound anything like Kiss, PD's don't choose the format, station ownership does. Also Djs provide entertainment and information where there would only be commercials.

Also unlike TV ratings there are no overnight ratings for radio yet, though People meter technology may change that in the future.

So I guess "An Insider" was spot on with his prediction that Eric Green would soon become one of the best met's in the tristate.

To 90sandnow:Yep, you're exactly right, radio ratings are for 12+. I'll fix it now. Thanks.

Got some more names from the past on radio for you all(are you listening Fred S?)
Ron Britain, Steve Kirk, Gene Barry(not to be confused with John Barry)and how about John Randolph at WPFB back in the early 60s when he had the request line. His real name was John Aspenleiter, and he was married to Connie Schneider at the time.I actually met him when they opened the Montgomery Ward store on what was then Stevens Avenue. We used to try to get through on the request line and ended up gossiping with other people waiting...
Lee Ann (And I was living on Flemming Road then)

Eaton radio...are you thinking WAJI? It has been Z93, WGTZ Eaton Dayton Alive since 1983 or 84. Love the legal ID!

Steve Bender...ex Q102 (mid 80s) and long time WINK 94.1 and Mix 94.1. I believe that means he would have worked there with Fred Slezak, to tie several posts together.

Wjai does sound right, and the time frame certainly is.

Whatever happen to the DJj's that were on MOJO 94.9. I know there are two dj from 94.9 that got hired on to the new MOJO 100.3. But, where did Laura Powell, Tori Turner, Luna Man, Quincey. Is it true that Keith Mitchell is running another radio staion here in town. What happen to Bridgett who was a part of the morning show?

I personnally enjoy the new MOJO 100.3.

With Liberal Talk WSAI's last breath, it still managed to beat out Oldies WDJO in the ratings.
Poor Poor Pitiful Dusty!

Not just Sound, but also Q102, B105 and Wolf 97.3 will be swapped according to a Seattle article. Something that didn't get covered in this blog, far as I know.

Yes, Entercom has swapped its 4 Cinci sations -- B105, Q102, Wolf and The Sound -- to Bonnevile, owned by Church of Latter Day Saints. Bonneville takes over soon.
