"Studio 60" pulled by NBC

Bad news for fans of Matthew Perry's "Studio 60." The last scheduled episode is next Monday, Feb. 19. NBC just pulled the Feb. 26 episode -- the last Monday in sweeps -- to launch "The Black Donnellys," a drama from the Oscar winners Paul Haggis and Bobby Moresco ("Crash"). The series follows four young Irish-Americans in New York City involved with organized crime.

"Studio 60" from writer Aaron Sorkin has been a distant second at 10 p.m. Monday to CBS' "CSI: Miami." Last week's "Studio 60," the second of a three-part sweeps story, drew 7 million viewers, down 1.5 million from the season average. "CSI" averages 17 million.

NBC says "Studio 60" will "return to the schedule later this season on a date to be determined."
Translation: Goodbye until summer, after the new fall lineups are announced?

I liked the show, but felt it never lived up to NBC 's summer hype. It wasn't another "West Wing" or "Sports Night" from Sorkin. And I heard from plenty that it was too inside TV for many viewers. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

John,

Update on Jim O'Brien for those who are interested:

Jim O'Brien is at WTHR-TV in Indy, and they are keeping him busy. He's doing part-time weekends until he decides what to do next. WTHR says they would love to have him back, but as his position there was backfilled by Jude Redfield ....his exact opening isn't...and the one that is, may not be at the right level for him.

I see we get to watch former Channel 5 executive producer Doug Hogan on channel 9 tonight as a state of kentucky spokesman blithering about why the state allowed an employee to rip off tax payers. That should make for good TV.

12 In Touch Poll:

What y'all think about the Liz Carroll/Marcus Fiesel trial coverage?

Do you like Dayna Eubanks and Deb Dixon's coverage?

What about "expert analysis" from 700 WLW's Bill Cunningham weeknights on News 5 at 5:30 with Sandra & Sheree?

So here goes an actual "Studio 60" comment... We were loyal "Sports Night" watchers. I was so mad when Aaron Sorkin left that show to go do "West Wing", I refused to watch "WW". Since my husband and I both have a background in media, we looked forward to "Studio 60". It definitely has highs and lows. The casting for the most part is great. One quibble - Harriet Hays, other than the Dolphin Girl voice, doesn't seem to be at all funny. It makes you wonder how someone like that got on a show like "Studio 60". The "Danny goes after Jordan" storyline came across as stalking for a couple of episodes. But the Gilbert & Sullivan parody on the second episode was one of the funniest things we've seen in a long time.

I think Studio 60 is failing because it hasn't found itself. It hasn't found its spine, its core. I enjoy the show but also think the Jordan/Danny thing is forced. I can't believe NBC hyped them getting together as something everyone will be talking about. Very forced.

I also agree with Carla about Harriett. I don't like the actress portraying her. After getting to know these characters, I don't see how Matt and Harriett were ever a couple. They're more opposite than Sam and Diane.

Besides Harriett, I think the casting is great. The most underrated performances on Studio 60 belongs to Steven Weber. His scenes steal every show. He is the authoritative figure who must right the ship through every storm.

I also think they are smart to not show the segments in the show.

I personally like studio 60. Matthew perry is great and funny and bradley whitford is good.
However I just dont see it coming back for a 2nd season. If this show was on cbs it would be the top new drama, but nbc doesnt promote it as cbs would.
Hey its getting beat in the ratings by saturday night live a show its a parody of.

Matt L- poor ratings of joey and it wasnt funny
Courtney- Dirt is horrible and hardly draws any ratings at all.
Matt Perry- Studio 60 is getting cancelled or at least it should.
Dave s- was in madascgar
Jennifer- will never be on a tv show again.

Kiese,
I know this is off topic, But what do you think of 24 this season. I love it the storylines are great and the actors are even better. It might just be the greatest season of 24 yet. What a great story line. This past monday Me and my family were watching 24 and were yelling at grams wife to tell jack.

How can Cunningham provide "expert"
analysis when he's not even in the courthouse. He's on the air while the jist of the trial is happening and he's getting his info second hand.

Just more wasted face time. When I see he's going to be on Sports Rock, I don't bother to even tune in. Same with the news.

Ch. 9 is using Phil Heimlich for analysis, at least he's been in the courtroom.

I was waiting for a post on the Carroll case from JK but there was never one, so lets start our own.

What kind of response is there to the streaming coverage??

How many people are tapping into the stream??

Isn’t this the first time local stations have streamed a trial??

Is Court TV covering this?

Will anyone bust up the coverage and post on Google video in one hour snippets?

I have watched parts of the stream and find it fascinating to see how a trial works.

Enquiring minds want to know.

I can’t get 5’s stream to work, 9’s requires RealPlayer/Spyware/Adware which I won’t install on my computer, 12’s works but it is sometimes jumpy and for Christ’s sake Dayna why do you talk over the proceedings to tell me Liz is on trial for killing Marcus!!! Dayna, watch a football game and see how the announcers shut up when the ref is calling the penalty, geeezzz...

It is a shame what is happening to Studio 60, but the storylines seem to waste the talents of cast members such as D.L. Hughley and Matthew Perry with type cast situations (producer still loves co-star, gimme a break!). I guess this will be a future candidate for Brilliant but Cancelled on Bravo.
Off the topic, will BBC America be airing new episodes of Life on Mars anytime soon? Season one was fantastic. Thanks.

Studio 60 is one of the best shows on TV, IMO. The biggest problem with it is the lousy time slot. I think NBC - for whatever reason - predestined it to do poorly when they put Studio 60 on Mondays at 10 PM. There are so few good shows in the NBC primetime lineup, surely they could have bumped something else. Maybe show one less "Deal or No Deal" episode.

If Studio 60 was a reality show, it would already have been renewed. How sad.

Deal or No Deal costs $500K/ep.
Studio 60 costs $2mil/ep.

Will NBC continue to invest in Studio 60 if it doesn't have a future in syndication where they can make up tons of money on the back end? I don't think so. I'm surprised NBC hasn't struck a repurposed cable deal to recoup some of the costs. In the end, NBC will take the profits from short term programming and move onto something else.

What is really said is that Studio 60 is getting beat out by the crappy What About Brian show.

Not true about "Studio 60" being beaten by ABC's "What About Brian" nationally. Season to date, "Studio 60" is No. 69 averaging 8.57 million viewers, while "Brian" is No. 123 with 5.87 million viewers.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Studio 60 may beat What About Brian in overall households, but I believe What About Brian beats Studio 60 in the coveted 18-49 demo, which is the most important number when it comes to media buys.

Check out Fox's new show The Winner...it's written by Seth McFarlane and stars Rob Corddry...bound to be better than Studio 60! You can take a look at clips at www.fox.com!

I have enjoyed the Studio 60 episodes because I've always liked Bradley and Matthew and this is the type of show that takes a while to delevop its audience. It is a shame that NBC is such a loser network that invests way too much in the night-time game shows and not enough in promoting its good shows. Las Vegas is campy, but fun to watch. Studio 60 has had its moments (the Gilbert & Sullivan parody) and when Matty met Harry filled in some of the blanks (especially the relevance of Luke).
