Turning Back the Clock with WDJO

Even if you're not into 1950s and '60s rock n roll, it's fun to listen to WDJO-AM (1160, or www.oldies1160.com ) to hear the vintage radio commercials. About 300 old spots are loaded into the computer -- for Alber's Supermarkets, Kash's Bargain Barn, Schoenling Beer, Shillito's, Jerry's Restaurants, 1960s cars, Harry's Corner that are dropped in during the day.

Operations manager Rodger Kay (Kauffmann) also has gone back and looked at 1960s top 40 lists to add hit songs from local artists to the play list. One original Cincy rocker, Mel Carter ("Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me"), who is heard frequently on the station, headlines the station's "Ultimate Doo-Wop Show" at the Taft Theatre Saturday night with the Skyliners, Maurice Williams & The Zodians, The Shades of Blue and The Contours. It's the station's first oldies concert since signing on the air February a year ago.

Which old commercials would you like to hear or see? Personally I miss the Kwik Brothers for King Kwik. It was corny, but I'd love to hear or see them again. And remember, you'll always save cash with Kash, the ole country boy!

It's not an oldie by WDJO standards, but I'd love to hear the old Plummet Mall commercials. Those were great!

hi john -

any updates on Uncle al and Capt Wendy - what have they been up to? I hope neither has passed away, I've been away from cincinnati a long time.

I remember those marshmallow (sp) cones they had, and his accordian playing.

wonder why there isn't anything like that now?

a shame

Dusty and the gang are doing a great job with WDJO. It is fun to listen to the real oldies again. Hope it is around for a long, long time.

As of a couple years ago, Uncle Al and Captain Wendy were living in Hillsboro, I think.

Al was on with McConnell a few years back but I forget the reason. This was before McConnell got so arrogant/and impossible to listen to.

I often wonder why there are no nice shows for kids and family today either.

I would love to see and hear any old commercials. I love all that stuff.

what a great station

wish they had Red Barn restaurant commercials - i loved their fried chicken (BTW Booj's is pretty darn good!)

wish they could do something about the interference from WYLL in Chicago, too

all in all a terrific asset for the tristate!

Just following up on the blurb from the paper yesterday on CET's website. I think you might want to check their press release. While they may be 2nd in traffic for the Alexa.com site - that data is not a valid sample. You must be using their toolbar to be measured and it has been known to contain bad spyware. As a result, their data is closer to meaningless than useful. I'm not a tech geek, but this has been the way it has been in the past.

WNET surly has more visitors, but I would bet WGBH, KQED and others have more traffic.

So my question is where was this verified? I would check with PBS on their traffic information. Just by pure population, I would find their numbers hard to believe.

Also, what percentage was actually viewing sales/underwriting videos (this drives up the # of views.)

The change in CET's site has surly given them more traffic. But these numbers are not real.

Please, this tired old music is as bad as it gets and then there is W. Emerson Rhoades acting like a teen ager. Grow up you fool. Oh well, the strength of the signal is so weak you can barely hear it more than two blocks from sixth and vine streets. What a waste of a frenquency!!!!

Kash's Bargain Barn. Anyone know exactly where Kash's Bargain Barn was in S. Lebanon? We bicycle through there and I would like to see if the old building(s) are still standing. My dad tells me I was there when I was a kid, but he don't recall where it was.

Thanks, James
