Valerie Abati Update

Today's forecast: Meteorologist Valerie Abati will be leaving WXIX-TV (Ch 19) in the near future. I hear for Pittsburgh.

Abati, hired three years ago, confirms she has a job offer. "The contract isn't signed yet, but I'll let you know the details as soon as it is," she says in an e-mail.

On Monday, the day that Lexington meteorologist Christie Dutton started at Fox19, the station posted a job opening for a full-time meteorologist. Says News Director Steve Ackermann: "We have a weather position posted and it has nothing to do with Paul (who is doing a great job on the Ten O’Clock News) and it has nothing to do with Christie."

So it must have something to do with Valerie. But Ackermann wouldn't elaborate.

Abati has been working nights this week while Horton trained Dutton in the mornings. Abati came to Fox 19 three years ago from Chattanooga, replacing Maria LaRosa. Now there’s a name from the past…

Filling Paul's shoes had to be tough, but Valerie did a great job. I was just getting used to her. Best of luck Valerie, but why Pittsburg?

Please God Nooooooooo! This can't be happening. She's the only reason I watch TV. Wonder if I can buy a strong enough antenna to catch her broadcasts from Pittsburgh?!

Any chances that Pat Barry will want to be the weekend meteorologist?

KDKA the CBS Affliate has a weather opening. Wonder if this it the new position? I am just glad to see her off air here. She stinks!

not to be mean but just a critique...how do these people get these broadcasting jobs...a requirement should be that they can speak and not just be cute...she always has a tough time getting through a cast...marbles in the mouth...i call it seg dennison disease...

Here is another vote for Pat Barry. I have really enjoyed having him on the air again with all of the fill in he has done recently.

Also glad to see Valerie Abati on the move.

She is from the area. She went to Penn State and is a huge Steelers fan.

I'd keep Pat Barry on Weekends with Regina.

Who cares about not having a NWS endorsement. Pat can speak fluent English, can adlib and makes a presentable and has good repore with Regina.

Bring back Kristen Cornett and let her fill Valerie's old spot!!

Or allow Kristen Cornett to fill in for Cyndee O'Quinn's maternity leave

I Agree with toddy-o and others KEEP PAT BARRY start calling Fox-19 and demand that they keep pat

The new girl, I liked her, she seemed a little nervous. If Horton was training her he needs to teach her how to have fun, it;s a morning show.

What Anon5:04pm said.

The state of broadcast journalism these days is in a sad, horrible state. Not just regionally but nationally, you've lost reporters who actually did investigations and wrote their own stories. Nowadays, you'd be lucky to find any real journalism on broadcast or cable.

Valeri? A huge Steelers fan. Wow that makes her a top notch citizen.

I don't know why people are so crazy about her. She's not that cute. Bringing back Pat Berry (Ernie Ego) is a BAD idea.

Say it aint' so! I can't say I'm completely surprised. We never did get an announcement that she was officially the morning meteorologist. She just sort of quietly took over the spot. Then they put the new person in that morning spot. Seems like the writing was on the wall… Question is who did the writing - 19 management or Valarie? Is this sour grapes over not getting the chief meteorologist gig? As Arsenio used say – Things that make you go hmmm…

Barry is old. I would be willing to bet half the Barry supporters on here are really Pat!

For those of you who always ask... this is the weather hierarchy (and anchor for that matter)... Add an extra for Ch12.. Michelle is #3.

Chief (M-F, 6/11)
M-F AM
Weekend (6/11)
Weekend (AM)

You have to figure this much, if Val wasn't getting the AM here in Cincinnati, why stay? Weekends (i'd assume thats what she'd be getting) in Pittsburgh is a step up.

Granted, there are a lot of factors that lead to why you would want each position or might request one or the other... but simply on paper this is how they translate. Many people make major jumps for little or no reason... welcome to televison.

Christi Dutton did fine. Obviously a problem for new weather people... town names and locations. Lets see how she fairs on her first live.

Only a local knows locations where people go to and from, and which locations mean somthing. Yesterday she kept talking about "Pleasant Run" like it was a city/town. I've only seen it on my GPS.

It hurts even people who have been around but aren't locals. Channel 12's radar is awful, it lists a bunch of "real estate" towns. Ever heard of Al Bar Meadows? It's on Ch 12's radar (and 5's too), I even heard someone refers to it? I had to look it up to find out where it is.

Anon 10:08,
I remember Rule #1 from my years ago TV/Radio classes at NKU, it was either Dave Thompson or Mike McMurray (can't remember which) that told us when we went for a job someplace we weren't already living in, it was of paramount importance that we get out some maps and local newspapers before we even interviewed for the job to learn as much as we could about the geography and items of local interest. The ones that do the news and weather today obviously never had that in their classes.

Give them a break... think about the east side/west side divide in this town...

How many people would know that Dent or Mack aren't places big enough to have a Kroger store, a town or anything of substance?

Or think about the other end... who on the west side would know that indian hills, while being the second largest city in hamilton county doesn't have a single gas station or store for that matter.

Compound that by 50+ radius from downtown plus three states... it's kinda hard to know everything.

at 6/29/2007 1:48 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, or the fact that IH actually only has one hill in it...

East side, west side, central city. Who cares, its all Cincinnati and its all backward!!!!!!!!!

Whats up with the love affair for Pat Barry? Ole Pat should stick with playing oldies on WSRZ 107.9 from 10-3 monday through saturday in Sarasota. He is more suited to this type of work!!

The real fun comes when we get heavy weather blowing in from Indiana. Milan isn't in Italy, Versailles isn't in France.

Speaking of weather babes... what's the story with Marina Jurica? I see her surface on 9 once in a while on the weekend mornings. Are they grooming her to be Cyndee O'Quinn's maternity leave replacement? I think Marina should be Cyndee's PERMANENT replacement. Marina is very smooth, polished, and pleasant to listen to. With Cyndee, only about half of what she says is actually understandable. The rest is a garbled mess of words that leave you turning to the Weather Channel for "Local on the 8's"!!

And... psst... hey Anon 12:33... Dent, in fact, DOES have a Kroger store. Just sayin'...

Valerie is the best! In my book, she will never be replaced!

Kiese---
What's going on with Marina Jurica? I thought she left Cincinnati (and went to Lex or something like that) and didn't want to return? Now she's doing the weather during all 4 of the weekend newscasts over on Channel 9 (?) I'm confused.....

Yippee!!! A Steelers fan huh!!!! That would explain the football helmet hairdo!!! No really I didn't care for her voice or much about her. She just didn't seem very well spoken or professional. Made the show seem sort of cheesy! Cute she was, but went to a different station for the weather that was better. Wish they would have left Paul on mornings.

WOW, This Explains why Cincinnati is not a hip town to live in. If Val doesn't like it there this town ain't hip. Explains why you have Highways named after Stupid OLD Republican Presidents & like it. What a bunch of sticks in the mud you must be.

at 7/05/2007 8:31 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Val will be missed. She probably finally found out that Cincinnati was not a hip happening town unsuited for such a classy woman.

at 7/05/2007 10:41 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

why on earth do you care whether someone else considers your town to be "hip" or not? Insecurity, any one?

Val did a great job and learned a great deal since joining Fox 19. In my mind, she became a trusted meteorologist. I am going to miss the weather babe.

Please don't keep Pat Berry in any capacity. I can't stand that egotistical clown. Won't he just go away and stay away

at 7/14/2007 8:36 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Since the morning news are all clones, the lovely Valerie sealed the deal for 19. Something about the slighly nasal voice quality even worked for me. Plus, she's a fellow PSU grad. Bus, seriously, Valerie, Pittsburgh?

any idea of when vals last day is ?

i will truly miss valerie. i'm a 40 yr. old female, and thought she was a welcome freshness to the morning news when she first aired here. i liked paul, also. but valerie seemed educated, but down to earth. this disappoints me so, but if it's a good move for her, then i wish her the best.
good luck valerie!

i love valerie! if she's leaving because she really wants to, then best of luck. if channel 19 pushed her out, shame on them! she's educated, well-spoken, and down to earth. i loved the hairdo! i thought she was great on assignments. channel 19 should have down WHATEVER to keep her.

Pat Barry is a hack. He gets east and west mixed up, and is no match for a meteorologist. Valerie always says a front "has went" through, but is easy on the eyes. Bring back Maria LaRosa.

I agree. She was the only reason my t.v. was on in the mornings. It is a sad sad day.

I just saw Valerie on WXIX last night! What's going on? Is she back? Please tell me, "NO". The screech level on that girl drives me nuts!

Valerie will be missed! I already miss seeing her in the morning. She's always cheerful no matter what the weather forecast is and that would help me start my day out in a good mood. I wonder if she knows what a good influence she is on people. Is she still single? I just might have to move to Pittsburg!

Valerie leaving - uugghh! She has the sexiest smile and body - why get rid of that eye candy, the weather is boring anywhere you watch, so give us more valerie to make it hot and humid!!!!
