His "Scizone," which aired on the station in 1999-2000, is part of the strategy to develop local programming on Ch. 38, which became an independent station a year ago. Ch. 38 also airs the live "Lincoln Ware" call-in show at
"Our goal is to broadcast more local stuff. We’ve got to build on local programming," says general manager Elliott Block, who founded the station in 1990.

Only being on Time Warner five hours a day confused viewers. "It wasn’t good. Losing DirecTV was more of a hit, because we were on there 24/7," he says.
Losing cable and satellite distribution has not hurt revenues that much. Income from per-inquiry infomercials is "still about the same, so people are still watching. We’re surviving fine," he says.
Do you watch Ch. 38? What would you want to watch on the low-power station? Last year they tried a "King of Cornhole" tournament. How about a revival of "King of TV Bowling?" Any suggestions?

Post a Comment*I for one would watch more than I have in the past few years if it had more local shows. Maybe even Direct would consider picking them up if it were a heavy locally produced channel. How about a small news department? How about having Randy Little head it up? Start small and do news breaks like 19 used to do in the mid to late '80s? How about covering more local sports? Maybe some of the smaller minor league teams like the Freedom, the Kings, Excite, smaller colleges like Mt St. Joe, or NKU, etc. etc. Also do different genre suggestions for movie nights? Friday night Fu did well, what about B-movie night, or other ideas? All ideas to consider. I hope things work out well for for Ch. 38, the only thing I don't like about Direct TV is Ch. 38's not on it!
John, do you think if they went to a heavy local programming schedule Direct or Dish would consider them again?
King of Bowling and how about roller derby? I saw it was back yet again. Definitely B movies and some of the old sitcom reruns that used to run on channel 19 or 64, Gomer Pyle, Petticoat Junction and the sort.
What a refreshing change to see someone really try to create local content. Maybe they could even pick up the spanish language programming that WKRC dropped earlier this year, and put it on at a time other than 5:30AM.
Anything but more badly produced local news...gads, we've got way too much of that.

If 38 wants me to watch. They have to start broadcasting in digital.
Since I got my HDTV, I can't stand to watch an analog station.
I can handle it not being in Hi Def but get your digital channel up on the air so that it looks good.

This is a bit off topic, but how come you haven't written anything about "WKPR in Cincinnati" airing on ALN (American Life Network, channel 110 on TimeWarner cable)? The station aired the pilot last Monday night and will have the show on each Monday night at 10PM. It's great to see the show again, although it appears that they've done what the DVD does: strip out the original music in place of generic rock and roll (very disappointing but maybe it's directly from the DVD ... can you find out?). And it's wonderful having it sandwiched between The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart. I don't know much about ALN but I'll become a huge fan if they keep bringing back shows like this.
When I went to UC I remember watching the Friday Night Fu. That show was cool.
It really doesn't matter what kind of local programming they develop.
Since they are a low power station, those of us in Ohio without a big off-air antenna will never get them - analog or digital.
How about webcasting their shows live? Then I could use my Slingbox or AppleTV to see the shows.
Seems like the only way to make the station "bigger".

Bill Boshears was enjoyable to listen to at first. Then the same dialog week after week and year after year.
If you dared disagreed, he got very nasty. How many people really needed to tolerate it?
Enough was enough. So many other stations had the same format.
His emails even sounded strained.
