A Pete Delkus Update

There's a terrific story about Pete Delkus by Ed Bark, former Dallas Morning News TV critic, on his site, http://unclebarky.com/ Someone posted the link on a different post today, but I wanted to make it a separate blog so folks could easily see it.

http://unclebarky.com/dfw_files/a2aebf6b5269f97c7dbec51dc22542fb-341.html

In the story, Delkus tells Bark that Channel 9 counter-offered his 2005 Dallas deal by offering him a lifetime contract here. All he told me in April '05 was that Channel 9 had made him a generous counter-offer that made his decision to leave Cincinnati more difficult. (He was completing the first year of a 7-year contract signed in 2004. The fine print allowed him to leave for only three cities: Chicago, Dallas or his hometown of St. Louis.)

Bark wrote a great story. Delkus fans will enjoy it.

Anyone still miss Pete? How does he rank among your all-time favorite Cincinnati forecasters? Top 5? Who's your No. 1 favorite forecaster? (Ira Joe Fisher? Tony Sands? Joe "Doogie Howser" Lizura? Todd Hunter? Tim Hedrick?)
Bonus points to the person who can name the most Channel 5 weathermen.

I do miss Pete. I miss the chemistry that him and Clyde had together.

Top prizes at Channel 9:

1. Getting fired

2. Quitting

100. A lifetime contract

Pete was better than Steve Raleigh, he had more confidence and good chemistry with Clyde Gray. The only good forecaster in the evenings is Tim Hedrick.

lets see at 5 we had. Mike nichols, mark massaro, susanne horgan, marina jurica, tom burse, jim o brien, dave frasier, kiesha kirkland, kristen cornett. Also the weather team now. Kiese these meterologists have been here recently. Something is in 5's water in the weather dept.

I liked Pete better than the new guy. I could watch Pete track thunderstorms for hours.

I don't really care for Steve Raleigh and I usually find myself watching Derek Beasley when the weather's bad.

What's with all of these former Cincinnati news personality updates, John? They sound like those dispatches from ex-girlfriends. "She's gone and she's so much happier without you."

Ira Joe forever! Mitzy Oxford never!

Do you think that Cincinnati could have a little problem with it's hiring practices? Any sane weather person would have to think about it real hard to come to this city!

John,
leave it up to your typical sad self to go and throw Ch.5 under the bus again with a wise crack like that one. You're such a pathetic excuse for a journalist you make me want to vomit. I'm not a huge 5 fan, but jeez, everytime i check your blog it seems like you've always got an ax to grind. You're an overweight, ego-centric loser.

Tony Sand's pithy weather report was better and just as accurate as the SUPER DUPER DOPPLER I NEED 5 MINUTES to hear my voice and blather on about nothing weathermen.

He also did not break in to PROGRAMS and screw up games and tv shows to endlessly cry wolf or tell us it's raining/thunderstorms/or snowing.

And somehow, EVERYBODY SURVIVED!!!

GOD I MISS THOSE DAYS!!!!!!!

:-)

Just my two cents, and my mom's and my sister's and ....

Frank Pierce, who put Paul Dixon on the floor with the famous line, "There's a large front headed to our area. It is followed by a big behind". Mr. Pierce was always so straight on the show that it blew Paul Baby away.

I grew in DC with a Louis Allen who was the weather man on ABC on Channel 7. He used to draw the weather with a magic marker on a big map of the US in the studio. As a child I used to draw my own weather maps emulating his. He also used to commercials with stick people as part of his nightly reports. Those were the days....

at 8/20/2007 12:12 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I forgot to mention Glenn "Skipper" Ryle who used to fill in for everbody on channel 12 back in the day.
Tony Sands was good until he started hawking snow blowers or some such thing back in the blizzard years. At least he wasnt a firebug.

By the way, Delkus was ok at best. And by the way, I'm not buying the lifetime contract either.

If anyone has watched John Gumm at Channel 12, he's one of the best this area has ever had. Plus, he's a hometown kid. Here's hoping he has a long a memorable career here in the Queen City.
