RIP MIX94.1

After going nowhere in the ratings -- except for Christmas music each November -- Clear Channel has pulled the plug on MIX94.1. The new branding is "Radio 94.1," with a tighter play list and less chatter. The station website urges "MIX" fans to tune in MIX stations in Lexington or Dayton, and says the "Wake Up With Whoopi" show can be heard as a web stream.

The station's target audience remains the same, women ages 25-44, explains Mark Anderson, program director. But it has pulled pop and dance songs for "a new kind of adult contemporary" format featuring lots of Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, John Mayer, plus music from the past 20 years by U2, the Eurythmics, Pretenders, No Doubt, Nickelback, Nelly Furtado, Dave Matthews Band, Maroon 5 and INXS.

"Music hosts," not DJs, give the name of each song. "The audience has always asked for that information,"Anderson says. The last 10 songs aired are listed on the station’s new web site. http://radio941.net

In spring quarter, MIX94.1 ranked No. 13, with a 2.7 percent audience share, down from No. 8 in spring 2006. The biggest ratings success came last fall, a No. 7 finish for airing Christmas music all November and December.

Give it a listen and tell me what you think....

The Station reminds me of the music that was played in the WB show "Charmed" on sonme songs.

heres a list of artists I think they should add:

Ziggy Marley, The Donnas, Switchfoot, Butterfly Boucher, Aslyn, Dido, Balligomingo, Stereophonics, Steadman, BeWitched ( Blame It On The Weatherman my favorite song of thiers), Beth Orton, Michelle Branch, Dave Navarro, Natalie Imbruglia, Snake River Conspiracy, Beth Hart, The Corrs, Collective Soul, Bush, Dishwalla, Paula Cole Band, The Cranberries, Citizen King, Tori Amos, Beth Nielsen Chapman, and Fuel.

Its not a new format or new kind of AC, its Modern AC. As far as the less chatter, there was very little of that on Mix anyway.

yea, more trash for the cincinnati radio market!

Less talk, more music! Brilliant!

I don't want to hear the DJ/radio personality's views on the latest celebrity BS that is going on. I don't care about their kids, their husband/wife, their cat/dog or anything else in their personal life. Just play music and be somewhat knowledgeable and care about what you are playing (fake it if you have to).

As usual the radio station owners leave the listeners in the dark. No announcement was made about 94.1 MIX or Wake Up With Whoopi. I was wondering what happened to Whoopi yesteday but I thought because of 9-11, she didn't broadcast. Now, it's Wednesday and no Whoopi. I like a lot of contemporary music but the new format is boring. Once again, Clear Channel has ruined a good thing!

How sad that things are going so poorly for terrestrial radio, that they now have to include the word "radio" in their branding. Hey, don't forget about the radio!!! Are you listening to the radio????

NO!!!!! I'm listening to satellite radio - like more and more people are. All this change and reformat garbage is better left in the 20th century. Heck, that's where most of the songs they play come from, right?

Cincinnati radio is a cesspool of reactionary bigots and 80's songs.

Pay the $12.95 a month for satellite. The receivers are cheap. They go in easily. And you will get more than a hundred channels, without commercials and a bunch of talk, but with great sound and VARIETY!!!

Good-bye, radio.

The last thing on CC's agenda is to provide good content to radio listeners.

The station will be like 94.9 the sound, but more 'clear-channelie"....full of clutter, occasional fake news, nationwide contests, and playlists that are bought and paid for by the record companies.

The end.

XM RADIO here I come!

The latest "burial" of 94.1 comes nearly 10 years to the day that WINK was imploded.

This continues the Clear Channel trend of not putting anything worth listening to on its fringe FM's so they don't pull audience from FOX and WEBN.

They do the same with AM airing nothing but garbage on all CC frequencies except 700, which itself is nearly in the dumpster.

I had satellite radio once. It wasn't good.
I don't want niche formats with songs that I don't know. I DO want local traffic, weather, and personalities. But I want them blended into my music well.
The sound quality on satellite was more like a web stream, and it annoyed me. Terrestrial radio actually sounds better than satellite when it's processed correctly. Plus, I don't have to pay for a receiver, installation, or subscription.
How much do the satellite companies pay this person to come here and post a testimonial to how fantastic satellite radio is in every topic?

Back to the topic at hand. It's funny to see that Clear Channel launched something to go after The Sound within the first year. The less talk, less clutter, focus on the listener presentation has already been done, and done well. Radio 94-1 just sounds like a generic version of the real thing.
Why doesn't Clear Channel try to take points from the country stations? Why don't they find another way to present some form of oldies? Or, if 700 is going to be the bread and butter of this market forever, why don't they simulcast it and brag about the ability to hear a clear, FM quality version for free? Or, as another option, since this is only a throw-away signal for Clear Channel, take a jab at grabbing more black listeners away from Radio One!

"nearly 10 years to the day"? Ignoring the silliness that that statement contains, who keeps track of that sort of thing?

Move on with your life.

For us Older rockers and Heavy Metal heads...bring back a station like the Power Pig from 1990-92!!!

at 9/13/2007 10:51 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

All Clear Channel stations have worthless programming. Thats why they resort to hoax like the Cunningham and Dennison so called fight.

at 9/13/2007 12:12 PM Blogger Unknown said...

Resurrecting the Power Pig or something like it would be great but it will never happen. As someone earlier pointed out everything CC does on the FM side is meant to protect WEBN.

As for satellite radio... Yeah the sound quality could be a little better but the amount of music variety and content make up for it. Yeah it sucks that I have to pay to get deeper playlists, better music variety, DJs that don’t talk over the music or about themselves. But I can't stand regular radio anymore. I got Sirius for Xmas a couple years ago - the best Xmas gift ever! Even better than that Huffy "Bandit" bike I got when I was 10!

Is this Mark Anderson the same programmer who changed Kiss 107 FM to just Kiss 107? What was the point of that? Over the last year, that station lost its personality and fun factor too. So maybe it's just his plan to take the spark out of radio. Does Clear Channel really think his way is the best way? Don't they see how stations like WEBN with the Dawn Patrol command ratings and revenue? I can listen to my iPod for music. We listen to radio for the personality and fun of it. This guy has it all wrong.

Attention Anon 11:50:

Recent study shows satellite radio subscriptions are down 30% for both Sirius & XM.

90% of adults listen to terrestrial radio.

Most radio web site listening is terrestrial radio station web sites.

Keep plugging along with your failed argument.

Verry cool! Sounds similar to the original Channel Z on 107.1 that existed befire Kiss. Would be great if they brought back Matthew Harris, Sterling and Wendy Walker.

I'll give it a little more time but my initial impression of Radio 94.1 isn't a good one. Trying to be 94.9 The Sound Lite isn't going to cut it. As for Local Radio in Cinci being a cesspool? I think it's far from it! I enjoy all types of music and stations here.
I enjoy listening to the Sound. I also like Rockin' Ron on WGRR, Lance on Homer, Brian Douglas on Q and Big Dave on B105. In my opinion they are all great examples of keeping it local and fun.

at 9/13/2007 7:00 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh three, what fake news are you referring to on clear channel stations? The only thing close I remember is the WEBN night jock reading the story about Ozzy dying, though that really wasn't news.

Also the Willie/Seg fight was not a HOAX, it at worst was a storyline that people lacking a sense of humor or fun just don't get. A hoax is saying something along the lines of terrorists have taken over GAPB or that a toxic cloud is on its way towards West Chester, not a staged fight between two characters on an entertainment radio show.

Bring Back the crew and programming when it was WINK 94.1

I listened to the new format and it sucks!

Hey Fred, Ready to go back to work yet ...

I guess the people that program this station think radio should as boring as possible. The music is nice, but I can create a better station on my aol. Hopefully they can collect enough ratings from people listening in elevators.

Anon 7:00 pm,

Entertainment show or political talk show host, which is it?

And you could not be more DEAD wrong when giving the definition of the word, "hoax". In fact, here is the Merriam-Webster definition

*** to trick into believing or accepting as genuine something false and often preposterous***

Shall we break this down? "To trick", I think we can safely say, the clowns at CC tried to "trick" their listeners.

"Accepting as genuine", did the clowns not post something on their "commercial, for profit web site" lame excuse for a web site, apologizing for the unprofessional conduct of their on-air stooges?

I think you are starting to see the point. Educate yourself, before you blindly try and defend the lame attempt at humor. Maybe some people do not have the sense of humor you think they should. But when the dame gag has been repeated so many times, with little tweaking or refining, it becomes stale.

That, in a nutshell, is WLW in 2007.

Thank you and good night!

am i the only one who longs for the return WWEZ?

at 9/14/2007 3:39 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wasn't paid a cent, thanks - but the big radio corporations are paying big bucks to try to defeat satellite. The sound is CD quality, by the way, which is a lot more than can be said for terrestrial. And i'd love to know where you got that stat on subscriptions.

at 9/14/2007 6:32 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I also miss WWEZ 92.5!

Radio 94.1? Wow Clear Channel is lacking in creativity dept. I've listened and it stinks. There are to many songs and artists that they play over and over.

at 9/15/2007 12:09 PM Blogger skippercollector said...

As usual, being about the only female who participates in this blog, my opinion on 94.1 is different. Since I'm someone who's never listened to hard rock/heavy metal/WEBN/harder alternative rock, I like what is currently on 94.1 I like pop (most 70s and 80s and some 21st century), 80s alternative and oldies--yes, I know, I know, some of you are tearing your hair out now, but that's your problem, not mine. The ONLY time I didn't listen to 94.1 in the past two years was during November, because I had no desire to hear Christmas music that early.
As for the status of Whoopi Goldberg, am I the only one who made the connection that the reason Waking up with Whoopi isn't on 94.1 is because she joined The View? No one else here has mentioned it, although I suppose there may have been some contractual agreement with the TV show's and the station's PR that they couldn't mention it.

at 9/15/2007 9:32 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mr. Anon...I got those subscription stats from trade magazines which get them from industry sources. Those subscription numbers are inflated even more when Sirius counts unsold cars with Sirius radios as subscribers.

My Sirius radio is definitely NOT CD quality. Don't know where YOU get your info. The channels I have listened to have also got very repetitive. I thought satellite was supposed to be such great variety?

To skippercollector, Whoopi's radio show has nothing to do with her TV show. The radio show was dropped from 94.1 because it doesn't fit the new format.

at 9/16/2007 10:59 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

More of the same, people. Nothing new, nothing interesting, nothing worth listening to. Still.

at 9/18/2007 11:26 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Clearly the MIX was broken and they had to fix it. Waking up with Whoopi was terrible. It was not fit for the conservative market of Cincinnati. Less Talk is great but I am not sure that its a women thing. The canned laughter and ego driven so called talent that this City (and syndicated shows) has to offer makes you want to vomit. Q102 is more interested in selling purses and pumping there stuff. WEBN hasn't changed in years and its old, not fresh and not funny. Bob and Tom is funny but the laughter makes you want to take a gun to your head. Of the 2 less talk radio shows though The Sound seems to win the battle of the future best.

at 9/20/2007 7:32 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Here's a novel idea...when will someone come up with a blues music format channel? This city is ripe for something different than the everyday BS we hear on the radio. And with the rich history of the blues right here in Cincinnati, why not? The Cincy Bluesfest has always been big here. Cmon CC, break some new ground and give the blues a try!!

I LOVED Waking up with Whoopi and I cannot believe it's been yanked. I looked forward to it every morning, and frankly, it was the only reason I had 94.1 pre-programmed on my car stereo. URGH! Signed - a Former Female Waking up with Whoopi listener between the ages of 25 and 44 :)
