Monday Morning Quarterback

So what did you think of the changes this morning?

--Jonathan Hawgood and Kristina Cruise anchoring "News 5 Today?

--Bernard Watson co-anchoring Ch 9's "Good Morning Tristate?"

--Alan Cutler doing WCKY-AM (1530 Homer) sports talk?

Taking Tim Lewis off the air in favor of Alan Cutler made a bad show even worse. Luckily, the Two Angry Guys are back on the air, so whatever CC does with their morning slot on HOMER is of little consequence.

News gathering has become a popularity contest. Who's on your side, and who has the best technology.

Breaking news has become the cry of the wolf. Every news story has become breaking news. Back in the day when the station announced a bulletin alert, the story was huge. Now simple things are breaking news to attract viewers.

9 has confused the issue with the breaking news center. Report the stories, don't sensationalize it. 9 should concentrate on putting a clock above the teleprompter so the anchors don't have to look over their shoulders to see the time in the morning.

If someone could add to the traffic segment just once a week, an update from ODOT on the progress of the current construction projects, this may be good info. Where is the project today, delays, when are barricades coming down. Things that commuters can expect & look forward to. Keep ODOT honest on the initial project timeline.

OTS,but -Somebody give us a break! on Saturday afternoon/evening There was NO six o clock news anywhere. Since i had worked all day i really would have appreciated even a shortened newscast.
from the neighborhood

Channel 5's news director has made a ton of poor decisions for this market. Will be switching, Todd and Lisa were the reason I watched. I watch 12 in the evenings.

I swore off Channel 5 but I have to admit I watched this morning for the sake of curiosity. Did Jonathan Hawgood study tapes of Todd Dykes for weeks? In a veiled attempt to appear more professional, he seemed to be mimicking Todd's very personality, he had the nodding, the head tilt and was even sporting a new haircut. In a word, awkard!
I am curious no more! Anna, John, and Steve here I come!

johnathan wasn't bad. kristina wasnt bad either. I can see Johnathan and Eric have some good chemistry. Eric Green can finally enjoy mornings.
I did notice however that Eric tossed it to pete everytime. Todd used to do that.

Overall for news5today B-

Brendan Watson did a good job this morning. I can see very good potential in him.

at 10/22/2007 1:29 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

So, on Saturday...one of the stations should have broke into the football games to do news???

at 10/22/2007 2:41 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The term "breaking news" is goofy and should be on the same bus out of town as the phrase "continuing in depth team coverage". TV news is a popularity contest and we have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to
much news on tv. Not to mention weather report. Like I care what street in Ripley Ohio the storm is bearing down on. As for the new anchors. They all look 10 years old and did you ever think the streets and towns they are talking about mean nothing to them since they are so new they barely know where they parked their car.

I was really beginning to like Terry Daniels on Channel 9. The new guy (Watson) seemed to be pretty uptight. I will grant him a little slack due to nervousness. I will check again tomorrow to see if he's a little better. Sure do miss David Rose!! But why wasn't Terry Daniels a good replacement??

at 10/22/2007 3:17 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why don't the stations run ticker thing telling people to to watch their weather channel on their other digital channel for more info? I'm tired of having my programs interrupted.

at 10/22/2007 3:19 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know that Anna Townsend is not necessarily new, but I was watching her news reports this morning and I realized what drives me nuts about her. She is easy to look at etc., but he voice is so weak. Speak up Anna, like you mean what you are reporting.

Alan Cutler? ha ha. I want to laugh every time I hear this guy on the radio. not because he is funny but because he is such a blow hard and just fits right in with meaningless radio in Mayberry. Local and lousy!!

at 10/22/2007 3:24 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

why does channel 5 always think it's the anchor that people don't like....CONTENT CONTENT CONTENT

at 10/22/2007 4:02 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I couldn't care less.

at 10/22/2007 4:07 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

You guys can complain all you want but programs will still be interrupted for severe weather and breaking news. Add years to your life and save the oxygen for breathing.

Tim Lewis was the Big Dogpoop. His knowledge of sports was weak. Now, let's get rid of Darryl Parks.

Watching Todd Dykes read the news is like watching Rain Man. He has no idea what he is saying. He makes Randy Little look intelligent.

at 10/22/2007 8:14 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I missed watching Todd Dykes on Channel 5 this morning. He is no Rain Man! I hope he comes back to anchor the morning show SOON. Todd, Cincinnati needs you! We are waiting for the powers that be to get a clue!

at 10/22/2007 8:22 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

and with that brillo pad haircut todd just didn't cut it for me.

at 10/22/2007 8:33 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Cutler is probably the most knowledgeable guy in local sports talk radio with the possible exception of Skinny & Lance. Is he a bit abrasive? Damn straight! Grow a pair already. Most callers don't like Cutler becuase they're just like the gomers that call in and deserve to get their meandering words fed back to 'em.

Here's hoping that the Cut-man NEVER wastes time talking about crap like HS Football. It amazes me the following that it has in this town. How unbelieveably hick town! Don't most people move beyond caring about HS like, the day they graduate???

John in the paper Sunday you mentioned that David got fired. That is the first that I have herd of this. All along you have mentioned that Channel 9 did not renew his contract. So which is it? Did he get fired of did channel 9 just choose not to renew his contract?

You missed what we thought was the best change of all this weekend,
Shawn Ley on Channel 12!

at 10/23/2007 12:58 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually, in my opinion, Channel 5 needed to change the weekend anchor for some time now. Frankly, Jonathan Hawgood needs someone to coach him. His style is more like a hotel manager or hotel doorman doing the news. He is very annoying in his delivery and is over bearing during his "happy talk". Someone please tell him what to say when there is video on the screen.Example, when there is a shot of Covington or Newport on the bumper shots, he just says Kentucky most of the time. Todd Dykes will be a welcomed change.

I just hope channel 5 got rid of Angela Brown...Worst reporter in the Market!!!! She does random live shots about stories that she could do in the studio. She always acts as if it is urgent breaking info, and she is out of breath. In reality she is reporting on a court case that doesn't start till after lunch.

After two days watching Bernard Watson I am very unimpressed.

at 10/23/2007 9:03 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Didn't Dustin Hoffman win an academy award for Rain Man? I still watch Channel 5 mornings, but you can't say anything negative about Todd Dykes. He is class and community.

at 10/23/2007 9:07 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Derek said it would be like this.

at 10/23/2007 12:52 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

When I hear Alan Cutler on the radio, I turn it off as quickly as possible. He is the absolute worst sports talk person that I have ever heard. He may be as bad at sports talk as George Grande is on baseball telecasts.

at 10/23/2007 1:39 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Cutler is in.....I'm out. Hello Angry guys! Anytime Cutler is on the air, I immediately switch stations. Him and McAlistar are one in the same. As long as you agree with them, you can have your say. Disagree and they talk over you and verbally harass you.

at 10/23/2007 2:58 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Cutler has a face for radio.

Unfortunately, that's his strongest qualification.

at 10/23/2007 4:43 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bad, Bad, Bad decision channel 5 executives! BRING back TODD when Lisa returns. Dykes, Cooney forever, new girl and happy boy NEVER!
Sincerely,
Wondering if ch 5 gets the message?

at 10/23/2007 6:25 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

In addition to his TV work, Cutler is a part-time motivational speaker, which means he has no concept of the amount of time he spends talking and having to repeat it several times to make his point. The station should put a clock on him and get a good producer/call screener that can weed out some of the weaker callers.

at 10/24/2007 9:47 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jonathan Hawgood is hilarious with actual personality. Aren't you tired of reporters who don't know what to say unless they are told?

Unfortunately, they all stink with the exception of Sheila and Rob on 19.

at 10/24/2007 10:17 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Exactly right on Anna Townsend. Nice person but hard to understand/hear. Speak up! What a difference last week when Paula Toti filled in. I could understand and hear her every word. Reminded me of mornings with Cammy Dierking.
Must be said though, 12 does have the worst local studio audio in town. Always echoes and sounds like the talent is off mike. So, compensate Anna.

at 10/24/2007 10:49 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Come on,,,, Sheila the teeth Grey and Rob whoever. Soooooooooooooo local and goofy.

at 10/24/2007 11:19 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jonathan is a great newsanchor and has personality. Todd Dykes just did not have it. The Kristina chick is horrible, bad hair and she is stiff as a board. I think Lisa and Jonathan will have good chemistry. Bernard Watson comes across serious and has done a good job, he is a bit of a Clyde Gray clone. Please put Bernards co-anchor on a diet.

at 10/24/2007 12:04 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Suffering through Cutler in small doses during Bengals broadcasts is bad enough and I can't change the channel fast enough whenever he fills in for vacationing hosts. Tuning into him during a regular time slot is unimaginable.

at 10/24/2007 12:45 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Whatever. Could Katherine nero look any better next to this guy? She seems to be the only thing keeping that show afloat. What is it now - three or four fill ins since David Rose was fired/left?

at 10/24/2007 1:18 PM Blogger John Kiesewetter said...

To Anon 12:45:
Bernard Watson isn't another fill-in. He's the permanent replacement for David Rose, after temps Brian Patrick and Terry Daniels.
--Kiese

at 10/24/2007 1:37 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kiese,
Bernard may be permanent, but you forgot John Matarese as a fill in. My point is, its been a long time and it seems like she's become the lead anchor.

at 10/25/2007 7:43 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just take a moment sometime and do the following:
Go from one end of the radio dial to the other and inventory what passes as radio personalities. Oh God, this truly is Mayberry, not to mention the programming!!!! Then if you are not ready to choke, check the local paper and read whats going on in Cincy. Whew, pack your bags and run!

news5 today was the leader in ratings on monday morning.

at 10/25/2007 10:27 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

it was sheer curiosity. it will fade. oh! new people had an effect! things are different now! um, it's been one day, people. one day.

at 10/25/2007 3:26 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Alan Cutler is great! My favorite local sports host. Very happy that he has his own show now.

at 10/25/2007 4:06 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not a fan of the new lineup on 5. John Hawgood is too over the top and the new girl seems like she just got out of school or something. Too inexperienced, IMHO. They had a good thing going, with people who seemed genuine. Why change that?

Todd wasn't on last saturday. But Pete (the traffic guy) was reporting? Nice to see him doing more. The girl that fills in for him when hes off isn't as good.

news5 today was the ratings leader for tuesday and wednesday also

I think Chris Knight is going to be the new anchor of News5 at Noon beginning Monday.

Would love to see channel 5 use Scalia more... He looks very comfortable at the desk and reporting, plus he is local. Lets not lose him....

at 10/29/2007 10:40 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd is a bobble head. Always nodding and trying to act interested and polite. He does not seem relaxed at his job. The community service he has done has all been covered by channel 5 news. Part of his job, boost for his morale, or something he really believes in and wants to do? Kate

at 10/29/2007 10:51 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Christina is new and obviously nervous. What's up with all the make-up. I know it is halloween time but she looks like the Cool Goul. Johnathan was nervous too. Professional the first 2 days then back to his old goofy self. Instead of going for the field goal, channel 5 needs to go for the win. Consistancy and longevity are the keys.

at 11/01/2007 8:02 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bernard Watson is very unimpressive. He looks like a kid fresh out of college who just landed his first anchor gig. No credibility whatsoever. Terry Daniels ran circles around this kid. Why wasn't he made permanent?

at 11/15/2007 2:22 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bernard Watson is terrible - he needs to learn how to read the scripts. He stumbles on numerous words and those are the easy ones! Thank goodness for Katherine Nero in the mornings - she's the only female anchor that isn't annoying! Bring back David Rose - at least he could read!!!
