A New Twist On WLW-WLWT Partnership

Did you see WLW-AM reporter Andrew Setters on Channel 5 news last weekend?

Setters, a morning co-anchor and assignment editor, was asked to freelance for Channel 5 due a staffing crunch. He's working weekends through Nov. 18, until Lisa Cooney returns from her personal leave.

Sally Thelen, Channel 5 assistant news director, asked Setters earlier this month if he could do some fill-in work. "She said they were short staffed, and asked me if I would like to give it a try," he says.

"As far as I know at this point, this is just a temporary situation. I think it was great of the people here at the Big One to give me the go-ahead to pick up some freelance work for a while. It's been a wonderful opportunity and I'm really enjoying getting a chance to learn another side of the business. A lot of the experience I've picked up over the past 9+ years at 700 WLW has been a big help in working at News 5, but there is definitely a learning curve that comes from taking a radio guy and putting him on TV."

Says Brennan Donnellan, Channel 5 news director: "Andrew has done a great job for us the past few times on the air. If other similar opportunities arise, we'd be open to it. So far, we don't have any further plans."

It's not the first time a radio reporter has made the transition to TV, although I don't recall a radio reporter freelancing for TV at the same time. John London (Channel 5) and Dan Carroll (Channel 19) came from WLW-AM, and network news veteran Edie Magnus did radio news at WUBE-FM.

Do you recall any others? Did you see Setters on TV?

Andrew has a great voice and not too bad on the eyes either. Most radio guys don't have a face for TV. Not the case here....

didn't mike schell go and do TV news in Dayton?

I believe Brian Patrick was a radio newsman at WCKY 1530 before going to Channel 9 TV.

Their staffing shortage must be really bad--bringing in a radio guy to do tv that doesnt even work for them. No experience?

Plus they started a new girl from out of the market anchoring? No experience?

These are the people that 5 wants us to trust when we watch?

Sounds like Brennan is trying to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Yes, you're right: Brian Patrick was morning host at WCKY-AM before joining Channel 9 news.... And come to think of it, before Nick Clooney joined Channel 12 news, his last job was morning anchor at WCKY-AM.

Before getting into TV Pat Berry was a DJ on Q102, then Midday host (prior to Mike McConnell) on WLW.

Tricia Macke also worked at WCKY before moving on to television. And I think Lisa Cooney worked at WNKU.

give me a break.

the new anchor may be from out of market.. but wasn't she anchoring at her last job? what qualifies as experience--only if you worked in cincinnati?
oh wait, it can't be that...setters told kiese he has 9+ years experience.
so you must mean only if they were standing in front of a camera, right? cause that makes you a better journalist.
channel 5 certainly deserves to take some shots, but you should pick your targets a little better.

I do NOT ever remember PaT Berry doing the Midday gig on WLW. Way back wen it was a couple of guys in the old Midday show on 700 but the names escape me at the moment.

McConnell has been around about 20 years. Pat Berry used to do some show at 3pm after Rush's show some years back. On 550 I think.

McConnell used to be on 10-2 before WLW went to three hour shifts years ago.
Just wanted to clarify that. I listened A LOT back then when Mike still used to be nice and fun.

Can somebody give McConnell back his old personality? His arrogant and snarky tone of voice is SUCH A TURN OFF!! Worse in the last few years and I used to SOLIDLY listen every day for decades.

RARELY listen now. Just same old same old now like most syndicated radio. And his callers? Yikes. I wonder if that hard to understand Sensible Don guy still calls in. He used to drive me nuts when he sat in on the station sometimes. HORRIBLE VOICE for radio. Needed a speech coach.

Not to mention WLW in general is a trainwreck. I s'pose once Burbank is gone Slick Willie will take over drive time since Daryl Parks seems to be in love with Cunninghams schtick. Frankenstein LOVES his monster but I digress.

Radio newsbrothers and newssisters moving to television is nothing new for Cincinnati.

From Peter Grant to the aforementioned Brian Patrick and John London, it's not be unusual.

Just some of the recent 10-20 years, in Cincinnati, Dan Carroll and Ann Alexander moved from WLW to WXIX, John London from WLW to WLWT. Kathy Lehr from WLW to WCET. Brian Patrick went from WCKY to WCPO. Wes Wright, Trish Macke and Dick Von Hoene went from 55KRC/WLW, WCKY and WUBE to Storer/TKR Cable/Insight (with Trish ending up at 19). Pat Berry from Q102/Clear Channel to WLWT/WXIX, Liz Bonis from Mix to WKRC.

I wouldn't be surprised if a simulcast of newscasts on radio and television happens, especially with the retirements upcoming at WLW.

WLW should put a webcam on Andrew so we can watch from the privacy of our own computers.

The late Steve Douglas (real name Ron Statzer) started as a newsman at WCKY in the late 60s and moved to WLW radio, and eventually moved to anchor Channel 5 news with Tom Atkins. Tom Craig originally started as a news reporter at WLW radio before moving to TV for Channel 5.

Saw Setters reporting. He did a good job. Also saw the traffic guy reporting last saturday, too. Are they going to start using him more at channel five? Hes not as goofy as that guy on 12.

At least he has experience unlike that goffy guy that has been anchoring on 12's morning show. My kid just got hired at one of the local TV stations and they are right out of college. I guess these days the cheaper the better.

Sold on chan9, Clyde Gray is the best at 11, Carol Williams is OK, but WXIX-19 is fairly good. Days on WLW are getting sickening,McConnell is so disgusting, we turn it off, blood pressure goes up when we hear his fighting personality over the air.He has been divorced, may have something to do with it.

Do wish Sensible Don would come back on WLW, and told to stop laughing and talking at the same time, which is why he can't be heard. He has more answers that make sense, in this crazy city. We Need Him.

And it is Pat BARRY, who is on the way out, thank-fully. He is a joke.
Barry Rose should never have been fired, he was clear and excellent to get the news straight.

Use Pete, the traffic guy more. He does a great job, he's local and he does a ton of charity work. I met him at function recently. A great guy.
