Day 58: Jeni Dinkel Free!

Is it just me, or is the media overplaying the jail release of Jeni Dinkel for completing her sentence for having sex with a teen-age boy? It was the top story on the 8 a.m. Channel 9 news today, and the 3 p.m. WLW-AM news.
Is a woman getting out of jail three days early for good behavior really the biggest news story today?
Of all the people serving jail terms for various crimes, why has this case received so much attention? Is it deserved?
You tell me....

I can't get enough of this story. Its one of the most talked about stories of the year. Its also better than what I saw in the Enquirer today.

The local media is so enamored of this junk news that I heard an over-excited reporter claim that a suspect was arrested for having sex with an "unborn" teenager.

First time she spoke about the entire incident. Plus, She got out at Midnight... by 8am on a Sunday what else is a "big story"?

If she were a man who abused a girl, she wouldn't be getting out. People are focused on the obsurdity of the lack of protection of young boys from predatory women.

It's as close to a celebrity scandal we've had locally so it will have to play all the way out. And there does seem to be a purient interest in all cases with older women taking advantage of teenage boys...whether they are teachers or not.

Could it also be the famous "Bengals/Hollywood" connection as well?

You are absolutely correct. Why not ask each news director just what made this non-story so important, and publish their answers. We focus on the news readers, but this is a good chance to take a closer look at the people making news judgments.

This whole case is entirely too confusing. How can such a large boy (6'3" and powerfully muscled) be raped. And what if we found out that Jeni was raped by this "boy" and then blackmailed to continue the relationship? Didn't this boy boast about these sexual encounters via the bathroom walls and then wear a shirt that says "Moms Love Me"?

I just got back from a business trip to the San Fran Bay area...I happened to catch the local ABC news three nights in a row and was amazed at the quality of the reporting. Yes, they reported on what little crime there is there, but what they focused on mostly was the great stuff that's happening in their area. And the stories are 3 or 4 mins long. Very in depth for local news. Here, the stories last 45 seconds and they're onto the next downtrodden thing. Bam, bam, bam. Why can't our news stations focus on the good stuff that's happening here without completely harping on all the bad. I can't believe I'm saying this but the SF media showed me that there is good news to be reported and that they're proud of their area, not focusing on the down side for ratings sake.

Disgusting, and true,to hear this 24 hrs a day on her release. Have pity on her cancerous son who has to hear this too. But the Bengals $ may have something to do
with the publicity. Keep insisting the news be more family oriented now.
