Time Warner Adds Disney On Demand

When Hannah Montana comes to US Bank Arena Thursday, Time Warner digital subscribers will find the Miley Cyrus "Hannah Montana" sitcom on the new Disney Channel on Demand.

Time Warner Cable will add the Disney Channel on Demand Thursday on Channel 1107. Digital subscribers will see free for two weeks (Dec. 27), then they must pay $3.99/month for on-demand access to the most popular Disney Channel shows.

In addition to "Hannah Montana," the Disney Channel on Demand has "Cory in the House," "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody," "That's So Raven," "Little Einsteins," "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" and "My Friends Tigger & Pooh". Disney on Demand customers also will see original movies seven days before they air on the Disney Channel, says Karen Baxter, Time Warner local public affairs director.

Oh, one more thing: Disney Channel on Demand is not available to former Adelphia customers. Just like they couldn’t see the St. X and Anderson state playoff games live on basic cable. If this keeps up, I wonder how many former Adelphia customers will be former Time Warner subscribers?

John,

The business Courier has an article stating that starting next week, WCET will simulcast their analog signal on their HD channel 24/7 and re instate CET create. Have you heard that? Not sure if the article got all the details correct. WCET's website doesn't say a thing.

I am already a former Adelphia customer who is also now a former Time Warner customer. I'll take satellite over terrible service any day.

I have a couple of questions, mostly out of ignorance... Is the On Demand service that popular that TWC continues to add to it? And why isn't TWC adding more HD channels instead? I guess I'm trying to understand TWC's claim that they don't have enough bandwidth to add more HD channels but somehow they find a way to add yet another On Demand channel.

It goes both ways though John, former Adelphia customers get the Versus network which the original Time Warner customers do not get. I'm still wondering when we will get Versus, NFL Network. If I could get those two I'd stay with Time Warner, but I'll be leaving in the first half of next year if I don't get them. I'm tired of the Time Warner run around.

$3.99 a month for Hannah Montana but we can't pay a buck each for the NFL Network and Big Ten Network.

In answer to Anon8:21 -- It is a very popular feature to my knowledge. And it takes much less bandwidth than 1 HD channel (about half).

Keep in mind, guys, that this is big business and things are much more complicated than bandwidth issues and allowing you to pay an extra dollar if you want Channel X. In regards to bandwidth, TWC is still required to carry most of their channels on both analogue and digital frequencies. I'm expecting a larger array of channels shortly after "the big switch". Satellite companies offer more HD channels because they are not burdened with having to simulcast digital, analogue, HD, On Demand, Phone, and internet, strictly HD, digital, and on a smaller scale, internet.

As for allowing you to pay an extra buck for Big Ten and NFL Network, TWC would love to give you an opportunity to do so. The wording there is correct: give you an opportunity, not force you to whether you want to or not. That's what the stipulations are for those networks: make even basic (meaning the $10/mo) customers pay the increase and have these services. They want the biggest slice of the pie: $650,000 a month with no opportunity to say no. I could care less about college games, and I'm disgusted with the NFL taking games away that were previously on free TV, let alone ESPN. So why should I be forced to pay an additional $2 for those channels? I don't mind paying $2 for an array of, say 5 or six channels, but that's steep in TV standards. And especially the NFL Network, where the only redeeming quality is the 6 or so games they play on that station exclusively (the rest of the year, what do they do, really? Draft? That's what ESPN is for. Replays of old superbowls? Come on...)

Don't rip TWC for other people's greed.

Probably too late for anyone to see this, but I'll try anyway. $4/month is rather silly. I have an almost two year old and tried out some of the Disney shows on On Demand. Little Einsteins was an instant hit. For $1 more/month, the DVR will record and keep a larger library. Considering all the other benefits of the DVR, paying for Disney On Demand seems silly.
