Avondale's Peace Bowl Murder on A&E

One of the city's more embarrassing moments last year – the Avondale murder which halted the youth football "Peace Bowl" Aug. 12 – will be featured on "The First 48" today (10 p.m., A&E).

Earnest Crear, 19, was shot twice -- in the head and back – south of Knott Street and Rockdale Avenue while boys ages 6-12 were playing football in a tournament organized to promote peace and unity on inner-city streets. It was the 11th homicide in Avondale, and the city's 44th of the year.

Detectives Greg Gehring and Kurt Ballman interviewed witnesses who saw a group of young adults gathered on the street during the football game. Officers eventually learned the attack was in retaliation for an earlier fight involving Crear's friend and Dante Allen, 19, who was arrested 10 days later. Court records later showed that Allen, charged with felonious assualt in May, should have been in jail. But he had been released after a prosecutor failed to request a bond for Allen pending his trial.

This is the second straight week Cincinnati police appear on "The First 48."

You can tell Sweeps have started. 5 is running an interview about Nick Lachey and his love life. 19 is trying to put a halt to losing viewers by airing Cool Schools in the morning. 12 is opening up a cold case file from 1996 tonight.

did anyone else notice that last night we didnt even get the 5 day forecast from Christi Dutton. She spent the time on two days. It also cut into my simpsons watching time.

I hope the cops read this blog.
I went to a peace rally up there the days following the shooting.
Nearby Detectives Greg Gehring and Kurt Ballman got out of their car and were standing around.

ONLY WHEN this grubby little guy with a hand held camera showed up ten minutes later DID THEY START LOOKING AROUND AND mugging for the camera!
Hilarous!
I didn't know then it was this A&E show.
These two couldn't have been more pompus and arrogant knowing they were being featured on T-V.
Need any more make-up guys?
I'll be watching for your big debut tonight!

Does Fox19 have $3 million dollars laying around to do this? 'Cause that's what Ch. 9 just spent.

It ain't cheap!

That's pretty sad. Guys who had been friends ... an argument .. a gun. Over and over this happens. And it's always young guys. Why is it never some 80 year old dudues? Who cares if 80 year old guys blow themselves away, they had their life. But young guys, they have so much to live for.

To 3:20 Anon,

You should have watched the show first before commenting. If you were there days after the shooting, the detectives already had their suspect (they determined who it was and started looking for him within the "First 48" hours) and were probably only there to do follow up for the tv show.

Regardless, they did their job and got the guy who did it even though most of the so-called people rallying for peace refused to tell them anything so they could get the guy. That seems like a pretty good job to me.

Fox 19 doesn't even have 3 dollars laying around. Have you seen their set, talent,......?

To anon 3:20

I work with those guys. The rally you're refering to was held I think about 2 days after the shooting. It was covered by the news. Ballman and Gehring did not go to it because they had been up working on the case for the better part of 2 days (at least 40 hours in those 2 days). They were home sleeping.
Besides, the camera guys ride in the same cars as the detectives, therefore it would not take an additional 10 minutes for the camera guy to get there.
You're lying and you're part of the problem in the city.
