Is Furman FInished?

Is there no place on local radio for Andy Furman? That's what he thinks. He says his radio career is over.

"Certainly it is (over), if I want to stay in town," he says. And he wants to stay in town. Furman says he was approached by sports talk stations in Miami and Dallas after his contract was not renewed by WFTK-FM last month, when "SupertalkFM96.5" changed to "96 Rock." Faced with the choice of continuing in radio in another state, he has decided to stay here (Florence), where his wife is a teacher and two teens (15 and 14) are in school.

"I love it here. My life is here. My kids like it here. This is my home," says Furman, who moved here in 1981 to be the promoter for Latonia Race Course.

Here's the problem: With Cumulus dumping Supertalk, all of the local sports talk/general talk stations are owned by Clear Channel, which fired him without cause after 18 years in November 2006. He has remained friends with many at Clear Channel, but I can't see the company rehiring a guy it fired. I'm guessing he feels that way too when he says, "I've decided the radio chapter of my life is over. It was fun.... I had a good run."

He's looking for work in public relations, promotion, sales or marketing.

So here's what I want to know: Can you think of any radio station which should pick up Furman? And can you suggest sports teams or companies which would be wise to hire Furman? What would be a good fit for him?

It is very obvious: PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING COMMENTATOR.

I met with Andy back in September when he was doing an appearance for Junior Achievement, and he seemed very "down" about the future at Supertalk. He felt then, that they didn't want him around for another year and that changes were coming.

ALWAYS TRUST YOUR GUT FEELINGS.

I've gone through this and wish Andy the best. He probably knows who this is, but I'd rather not use my name on this one.

Now, for the crazy idea of the day.
Richard Castelini should hire Andy into the promotions department with the Reds. Not only would he create a stir among the corporate types and suite owners, but can you imagine Andy on game day doing the "Fan Cam".

What do you think?

If you get the gig Fur-ball, you owe me season tickets.

Well If I Was Local Sports Team I Wouldn't Hire The Guy, Considering The Last Local Sports Team He Did Promotions For, The Richmond Roosters In Richmond Indiana, Left Town Then Folded.

Adios Andy your shtick got old. Please don't believe anyone wants you back on the air either. Antgonistic, hyper-critcal attacks on individuals that perform at levels far above any you could dream of doesnt cut it anymore. Thank you WLW for getting Paul Daughtery on the air.

All sports teams in Cincinnati would seem to be a fit. Also, he could look for opportunities on the internet, e.g. the new scripps site, Cincinnati.com, the 859 site. Mr. Furman could look for parttime fits broadcasting high school games. Does he need to do just sports; did he not broadcast other than sports? Also, don't be concerned about his reputation for antagonistic - this was standard for WLW.

Best of luck with your new career direction, Andy. I know you did a number of different types of career positions before you got into talk radio and you are very capable getting into new types of work.

I enjoyed you while you were on the air.

I understand that Mr. F migh be appearing on a local music station doing sports commentary segments. What do you think?

Well, I really like Andy on the radio and consider him the Dean of SportsTalkers in Cincinnati. If he doesn't get back on the air--and I cannot imagine that he won't--it will be a real loss.

It will be a miscarriage of justice. He's made to do sports talk!

Andy isn't limited to just sports. He did a good job switching topics when ever snow hit and people were still stuck in traffic at 8pm. I remember him talking with people in Butler county when tornadoes went through a couple of years ago. It was good because no-one else on wlw was doing much.

Andy's departure from radio has left us with a sterile sports talk format in Cinti. He was great at interviewing and his frank commentary was stimulating. I hope someone convinces him to return to the media. Maybe TV? He would be fantastic with the Reds, eh Bob?

I used to despise Furman until I got a taste of Paul (I am too smart to be a sports fan...they just pay me to comment) Daugherty. At least Andy could keep a show interesting and not put me to sleep.

I agree he will not be back to CC. He has some TV experience as well and I could actually see him working out some local gig doing some type of TV sport show. They could rip-off the whole "PTI" formal and have Andy and another guy holler about local sports for a while. Not my cup of tea, but it would be DIFFERENT from anything done locally.

If the Reds or Bengals hire Andy Furman, I'll dump my season tickets. At least on the radio, I can turn Furman off, which I did for 10 years. I won't stand to listen to him at the ballpark. There's a reason he's unemployed: His time in Cincinnati is over.

Andy should get into professional blogging. I'd love to see his commentary on things. He's an entertaining guy. And his sandwich at Izzy's is good too.

Yeah, I liked the "Andy Furman," at Izzy's. It's still on the menu!

Andy didn't do promotions for the Roosters, he was the part owner, the majority owner moved them to Traverse City and he got out. Get your facts straight.

Furman should open a restaurant, oops he already tried that. Loud, boring, and not much knowledge. Good riddance.
