A Super Sunday?

For once, the Super Bowl game was better than the commercials. Do you agree?

The best came first: Bug Light enabling a guy to breathe fire. That made me laugh out loud. Sadly, I can't say that for most of the Super Bowl ads. P&G's talking shirt for Tide was OK, and so was the FedEx carrier pigeons. Overall, the spots lacked wow factor. And I don't blame the pregame hype about the commercials, because I tried to avoid the publicity last week so I'd be surprised. Instead I'm disappointed.

What were your favorite spots? They're all posted at on myspace.

The baby Ameritrade were some of the best "late-game" Super Bowl commercials ever. Combination of cute baby plus humorous ending equals classic commercial. If it was on earlier in the game, it would've been a huge hit.

But the game was one of the best in years.

Our family thought the funniest bit was the Terminator robot beating up the Fox NFL robot and the Budweiser dalmation training the horse to be on the wagon team.

Superbowl commercials jumped the shark because of the repetitive BudLight ads...same formula, same old crap.

Looks like advertisers cut WAY back on spending.

A couple ads were OK, nothing rip-roaring funny. Most rather forgettable.

Looked like the FOX national ad salespeople left a lot availabilities UNSOLD. One break near halftime had nothing but FOX promos. All those plugs were awful.

If you can't sell the ad time, skip the break.

i will preface this by mentioning that i'm a graphic designer who works in the "branding/advertising" field.

fav overall ad: Tide talking stain.
my wife and i laughed out loud, and for a long time. i know P&G is trying to go after men, and they nailed me (31 yrs old). fantastic ad.

runners up:
- e*trade talking baby. the spit-up one is great because we have a 13 week old who watched the SB with us.

- dorito's mouse trap. i laughed about as hard at that one as i did the tide spot, but wife didn't smirk. again, i think it was a guy thing.

- fire-breathers. well done bud lite. well done.

honorable mention:
- audi, the godfather. you don't use that film as means to an ad unless you have a car like *that*.

ad that made me mad:
office of national drug policy, drug dealer. paid for by you and me. same day that W proposes a $3 TRILLION dollar budget. good timing. bad creative. bad acting. bad concept. i don't need to pay for that.

overall, great balance of game and ads! best i can recall in a long time.

The game was unwatchable on DirecTV via channel 19. Great job WXIX!

I wish I had a favorite. Too bad those of us with COMCAST cable in Southeastern Indiana had to listen on the RADIO. Comcast went dark around 6pm and didn't recover unil well after the game had been completed.

I agree the Bud fire breathing commercial was the best. Nothing else stood out. And yes the game was actually worth watching for a change!

The talking shirt stain and the dancing lizards were good.

GM spots were horrible. Ditto Coke.
They should have saved their millions.

The NFL should have better control over how the televising network promotes itself. Too many Fox plugs. Guess they couldn't SELL the airtime so they used it themselves.

For once, the game was better than the ads.

I agree that that National Drug Control ad was an outrageous waste of money. I don't care if FOX donated the time.

Can you say Reefer Madness.......

Most cerebral: - Audi

Laugh out loud - Tie: Dorrito's mouse trap and screaming squirrel Bridgestone.

Sentimental favorite - Tie: Coke-Macy ballons and Bud-Rocky theme workout

Lame: All flavored water ads

Funny but made me cringe: Jumper cables on nipples

Direct TV had 1st half issues, then when innodated with phone calls shifted to channel 701 for a crystal clear 2nd half. Nice recovery.

I really like the audi commerical. That car is sharp.
I had to explain the concept to my friends when the ad came on.

Tide was also good.
Fed ex was so funny.

Anyone else think the talking animals and such are slightly creepy? Everyone is doing it, so where's the uniqueness?? (Reminds me of the old adage of "why does the dog lick himself?")

Remember the old IBM "shaking camera" ads? Six months after they came out it seemed like every other commercial was a shaky camera commercial.

I don't think Madison Avenue is as creative as they want us to believe.

I am shocked the only fox 19 promos were for Rob and Shelia in the movie with tom hanks.

Kiese I was wondering what the superbowl numbers were here in Cincinnati?
Did it affect House or fox 19 news?

I thought the Planters commerical was the best.

for those of you with problems watching the super bowl. Ever think about an antenna. It was in HDTV over the air from both WXIX 19 and WGRT 45 with none of the compression that the satellite and cable companies do to the signal

Yeah... what was up with DirecTV/WXIX? It was making me sick at times trying to watch it?

And no I can't watch via the over the air signal because I live "outside the 275 loop" and the signal drops in and out sometimes.

My faves were the Terminator hammering the Fox Robot (not really an ad, but a promo) The Guys sneaking Bud Light into the wine and cheese party. The Audi spot (I love the Godfather and that new car looks GREAT)

Too many gross commercials (the baby puking, the jumper cables on the nipples) far too many weak ones. A lot of jingoistic ones too... Carlos Mencia, Sales Genie Panda ad.

I thought that the Bud Light Commercial where the guy could spit out fire and light the candles for a romantic evening until the cat came in which he we allergic to was a good one

Well, there's your problem. You avoided the hype, but were still expecting a surprise.

They're commercials! We'll be sick of even the best ones within a week!

Loved the "I play oboe" ad. As a musician geek, it warmed my heart. And I think we can safely say it's the first -- and most likely last -- time the oboe will make it to a Superbowl... :-)

I live INSIDE the 275 loop and can get most dayton stations HDTV with an indoor antenna... According to the FCC I could get Louisville with an outdoor.

Now with analog over the air (same antenna) I can hardly get 5 and have static/ghosting with every other channel.

The Sales Genie ad with the pandas was offensive. I don't know how that one made it past the censors.

I watched the entire game on WXIX via DirecTV and had absolutely no problems. I don't get what you're complaining about.

I loved the Macy's Parade balloons chasing the Coke bottle, and Charlie Brown ending up with it in the end. Nice to see the underdog win not only in the Super Bowl, but in the ad too!

I had no problems watching the game on my directv i don't have hd service. The cars.com "plan b" and bud spot with the dog training the horse i thought was good

at 2/05/2008 3:59 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

It was the HD feed from WXIX to DirecTV that failed. It wasn't a big deal, quit being so dramatic.

at 2/05/2008 4:17 PM Blogger Unknown said...

The Directv-WXIX problem must have just been on the HD feed. The picture was kinda jumpy and jittery especially when the camera was panning from side to side.
