WLW Dropping Paul Harvey

WLW has said "Good Day!" to Paul Harvey. Reports by the 89-year-old broadcasting legend (who has been absent most of this month) will not be heard Monday on Cincinnati's No. 1 station.

At 6:25 a.m. Monday, Harvey's "The Rest of the Story" feature will be replaced by Gary Burbank's "Earl Pitts" commentaries, which haven't been heard since Burbank retired Dec. 31. (Welcome back to the Big One, Gary!) What they should do is run some of Burbank's old Paul Harvey "The Rest of the Story" bits at 6:25, and air Earl Pitts at Harvey's 8:30 slot....

Bill Cunningham's talk show will start at 12:05 p.m. Monday. The extended news block with Harvey has been dropped. Now Cunningham can go head-to-head with Rush Limbaugh at noon.

I haven't heard of any stations picking up the Harvey features. Hamilton's WMOH-AM (1450) talk station and oldies WDJO-AM (1160) haven't been pitched Harvey by ABC. I honestly don't know which other non-Clear Channel stations would be a candidate for Harvey.

In the early 1990s, when WLW-AM acquired WCKY-AM and WKRC-AM programming, I remember how excited the WLW-AM folks were to get Paul Harvey. The managers felt they needed Harvey to be a complete news-talk radio station, when he was in his prime. I'm not surprised they're dropping him now, especially with all his absences. Nobody can imitate his unique voice inflections, and those who try sound like a Burbank bit or former SNL regular Joe Piscopo doing a spoof.

And now you know the rest of the story... Paul, you had a good run. We'll miss you. Now it's time for Page 2! Good Day!

Thanks for the update, John, on Paul Harvey's departure from "The Big One"

I enjoyed Paul for decades but at 89 and his many absences it is hard for a station manager to make a long term commitment with Paul Harvey.

I always thought Paul's son, Paul Jr., could pick up his show and carry it on with much similarity to his father but if Paul Harvey Jr. has not replaced his father by now, I don't think he ever will. But, I will continue to listen to Paul Harvey if it another local station picks him up or if his son takes over his nationally syndicated news and comment show.

If WDJO doesn't pick up Paul Harvey, I wouldn't be surprised if Bonneville picks him up for their country stations in town.

Another sad commentary on corporate radio and the clear channel hatchet. Perish the thought of putting more expanded local news. Oh, I forgot check 700wlw.com search word news as the so-called news reporter say on their excuse for a news broadcast. Oh my what a mess radio has become. Thank you corporate america.

Paul Harvey is too old for B-105! That audience wouldn't be happy to hear "The Rest Of The Story".

WDJO's audience would be perfect for Paul Harvey (and his fill-ins).

Please WDJO...pick up Paul!!!

Hope WDJO picks him up. He's an icon of radio broadcasting - when he's gone there won't be another like him.
Enjoy the nostaglia while it lasts...

Not really important, but to my own memory: wasn't it Rich Hall who did the Paul Harvey bit on SNL?

I must admit, it is a shame that WLW is giving up on Paul Harvey. At the same time, in his absence, it has not been the same, so dropping the segment may be a good thing. I just hope this is not the end of Paul Harvey's broadcasts in Cincinnati. They have always been the staple of my lunch hour.

There is no doubt that Paul Harvey tells a story like no one else. But it is the content of his "Rest of the Story" bits that are interesting and make good listening.
These are written and researched by his son, Paul Harvey Aurandt Jr. (That's Paul Harvey's full name.)
To replace T.R.O.T.S. with Earl Pitts...Is indeed the pits!

To Anon 6:54 a.m.:
Rich Hall did Harvey on SNL, but I've seen Piscopo do him too. Thanks.

First of all - the guy is 89. Its time to retire.

Second, did people really still listen to that schlock? It was a 20 minute commericial disguised as a newscast.

Good riddance.

If 700 took off Paul Harvey, they should consider removing the rest of that so called on air staff. They are , well forget it!

Paul Harvey, bless his heart, rediscovered the wheel every single day. A master rehasher of old news stories. The great over-enunciator. Condescending in tone, his tedious explanations of the obvious were an insult to the intelligence of his audience. Removing him from the air was a LONG time coming.

Now we know why Paul Harvey has been absent lately. His wife just died today after a year long battle with leukemia.

It's a sad day in my life when radio
greatness like Paul Harvey is taken
off a station that claims to be "The
Nation Station." I fail to see why
B-105 listeners won't appreciate his
newscasts, the rock & roll station
in Nashville has had Paul on for
years. But then again, I'm sure all
the people who posted here trashing
Paul hated hearing Joe Nuxall on the radio as well, after all he was old
as well.

700 WLW does it again.Burbank retited and you failed to get a decent replacement(I guess you are trying your two clowns, they are a joke)now you drop the best news broadcaster that has ever sat behind a mike.I guess his positive news gets you down, you need more of your trash reporting and your stupid wheather jokers to continue to try to scare us with their retarded reports. I for one am moving to other stations, you broke the camel's back by dropping Paul Harvey's 5 and 15 minute programs. I know many other people that share this same feelings, too bad you are so far out of touch. P.Gardner
